That is true! My Grandparents always buy when things are cheap, and buy plenty. It was always a bit of a family joke, and I never really understood. But since I've moved into my own home, I finally get it. It's not that my Grandparents struggle, far far from it. But they're both war time kids, hate waste and hate paying more than they need to.
It's like with half price deals. A lot of people I know will just buy the one and think 'Great, I've saved £2!' but I'd rather buy 2 and save £4 the next time I need to buy it. I prefer that to BOGOF, oddly. But I think I just like having the choice in how many items I get!
Put the new furniture up in the spare room yesterday. Using the shelving unit for our stock pile of food ect, and the room finally looks neat. I'd share before and after pictures but the before just makes me cringe! The rest of the house is perfect, everything in it's place. But that room, it's like a house worth of mess was just chucked in there! Also got all our winter things packed into one container so we're ready to start prepping come September.0 -

We all have a room/cupboard/something like that so don't feel bad about it. I'd love to see the before and after pics if you change your mind.
I also love hearing about grandparent traits and old ways - I think we have a lot to learn from them.
My Nan has enough money to buy what she wants when she wants grocery wise yet she will trek into loads of different shops to get the cheapest one and save £1.30 or something which for me - I need that to pay my debt off which is why I would do it, but for her, she doesn't need it - it's the old ways which probably would see her through if hard times did happen to strike.Debt - CCV £3792
CCB £1383 (took a hit for a holiday)
Loan 1 £1787
Loan 2 £1683
Total £8601 Was £393020 -
Do we happen to have a preparing for winter checklist anywhere? I plan on going through the threads over the next week making a shortlist of things to do but wondered if there was anything out there already?

Someone a few posts ago suggested getting a small notebook and going through the thread. Looking at the length of the thread I'm going to get myself an A4 pad! When I've gone through it I'm going to then type it all up neatly onto WordPerfect and print a copy off for future reference. Mind you at the rate I'm going it's going to be winter before I make a start!0 -

IMO they should have kept their prices low. PPl will tire of Oxfam as things in there are 8 quid 12 quid etc.. books are 2 quid each at least.. to me i wouldnt pay 2 quid for a secondhand book but would the 1 quid in the first charity shop. They should be cashing in on their cheap prices..:cool:What Would Bill Buchanan Do?0 -
That's exactly what I was thinking when I saw the post about a notepad - I am going to do it but it will take a while.
By the sounds of it, the winter we're expecting means I need to do it sooner rather than later!

If you go to the first post, there is a link to the original thread.
Go to post one of that thread it has a list and there are quite a few in the first few pages.
But as everyone's home/lifestyle/travel etc is different there isn't just one list.0 -

It is just a programme for typing letters, docs etc. Nothing to get overly excited about! Just that anything can be saved, amended etc without having scrawled all over a piece of paperA smile costs little but creates much0 -

Heres an after photo. Although it's a dark doom, so looks pretty gloomy as it was getting dusky! I snapped a photo of the inside of the shelving unit to email my Mum. Which looks like this if anyone's interested! Plenty of tinned things: meats, veg, soup. Jars of sauces. Rice, pasta and noodles. Lots of stuffing when it was 10p a box as OH loves seasoned pud! A magically untouched Easter Egg. Plus enough hot chocolate and coffee to keep OH a happy bunny until the end of the year at least. The bottom of the wardrobe is filled with surplus cleaning products (I swear we have enough gifted laundry things to keep us going until 2013) and the secret cola stash too :A
I agree about having a lot to learn from the older generations. I take everything my Grandparents tell mo to heart. My Grandma always tells me to clean my house like I'm expecting the Queen and my Grandad was the one who drilled 'Buy twice at half price' into me. They're also generously paying for me to get double glazing this year, they're nothing short of amazing in my books!0
