Take a look at this that I have just posted on another thread.

    ;)

Anyone going to have a try?

Hooray! Found some of these screws by chance yesterday. It was a box of 120 Rolson screws for £2.35.

I won't be able to use all of them as some are too long but there are enough in there for at least 3 pairs of adult shoes.

I found some old walking boots and put 10 in each shoe.

I'll have to dig out the electric screwdriver though as I have a blister in the palm of my hand from the screwdriver, you have to apply a bit of force to get the screw started.

If you look at the pic of them, the edges of the hex are raised and this is what helps the shoe grip the ice.

    :D

The police carried out an operation here not long ago and FOUR OUT OF EVERY TEN drivers were uninsured. I was shocked and horrified and I don't even drive.
Sorry just catching up. My brother is a police mechanic and has spoken to his police colleagues about the amount of uninsured drivers, they all said the reason many young kids don't get insurance is the cost (it recently cost my brother over £2500 to insure my 18yr old nephew's old fiesta). The policemen said these young kids will normally buy an old car for a couple of hundred pounds and even if they do get caught by the police they only get fined about £200 so it works out cheaper than insurance. When they get caught their car gets crushed but they just go out and buy another.

For those preparing for power cuts ( we have loads as we have overhead cables) two things I have found totally invaluable here where I have two elderly frail parents, one of whom needs a walker, are these

Also find these really useful as well as they are so bright and can be hang anywhere

I think this weather coming is something we've not seen before. I might go and get one of those suitcase type camping stoves that use canisters, saw it in a cheap shop today for £6. At least we could boil water or heat soup and use it camping if its not required!.

At £6, I'd certainly grab one. Have never seen them anywhere near as cheap as this and the little canisters last quite a while. We've had SO much use out of ours, just using it outdoors in the summer with a griddle pan or frying pan on it for cooking sausages, burgers, chops. It's so much quicker and cleaner than setting up a barbeque. Get a good supply of canisters though - you can never find them when you need them!

They had the canisters too, pack of 4 (I think) for £3. This is going to be fun lol

Bought my kids a head torch each from Poundland, I wanted them for their stockings anyway as we will use them camping, or cub camp. Not sure how good the poundland ones are, has anyone bought one?

Is there a list anywhere of things to keep in your store cupboard, in case you get snowed in, etc? Things like UHT milk? There is so much information on this board it's hard to find stuff. Cheers.

I also got my son a head torch for his stocking (I once tried to improvise when camping with one of those stick-on tent lights, but the adhesive was stronger that I expected... :o)

The Poundland torches are usually quite good - I've got several of the 'wind up' ones.

Another hint for powercuts - you may have a gas hob - but does the ignition work on mains electricity?
Have a couple of boxes of matches handy!

Thanks stumpycat, good to know they are ok - you never really know what the quality is like and theyre in a sealed pack. My two had wind up torches a few years ago so we're now fully equipped lol

Re the hob, I'm all electric but good point for anyone else reading this.
