Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker Savvy Shopper!
We have a bedroom fireplace that had a pillow stuffed up it when we moved in 12 years ago, and its still there. Never thought about it before but God knows what it wil be like if we pulled it out now!

There are two "winters of discontent" so you are both right. 1979 - the Jim Callaghan one - is most commonly referred to as that now but it CAN also refer to 1973, also called the 3-day week. Much was made at the time by people who disliked the Heath government (including my father!) of the fact that 1973 had been called the winter of discontent and that the WHOLE quote is "now is the winter of our discontent made glorious summer by this son of York" - and of course, Wilson, who succeeded Heath, was a Yorkshireman. Oh, the wags! :rotfl:

i put the pillow in a bin bag before shoving it up the chimney - stops it going soggy!

My top discovery today whilst building dens with dd is that spending the afternoon under a blanket draped over 2 chairs is very cosy and draught free - think we might be doing that a lot this winter rofl!

  • Regarding the freezer issue in the event of a power cut -we have a 6day coolbox which we bought initially for camping without EHU but it has been invaluable in many different ways. Filled with ice in the sumer was great for cold drinks which freed up the fridge. When I needed to defrost the freezer in the height of the summer filled it up with the food and didn't have to worry about anything defrosting - so this could also be used if we had a power cut in the winter.

We also have other camping equipment that can be used in the event of a powercut. gas lamps, gas heaters, not to mention all the candles around the house which aren't allowed to be lit ;)- (they're for show!:rotfl:)
  • I bought 6 tins of corned beef tonight for £1 a tin (John West as well!) and added to my store of tinned tomatoes with another 9 tins. At least we'll have things in to eat if all else fails :) I will be getting some more of the corned beef (as much as anything because it's a good offer and DH loves corned beef hash!) and at the weekend I'm taking mummy dearest to the big Home Bargains to stock up on toilet rolls and other bits before the VAT goes up :)

  • Please dont shout me down.......

The majority of the population work in the private sector which often dont have the option of striking when decisions are made that they dont like...

I personally believe it impacts the general public more then the government.... its the vulnerable that are the worst affected.

We voted the government in .... .we didn't complain when all the money was being spent, i know it wasn't all spent on the public but even so. Debt has to be paid back one way or another...

Personally rather then cuts I believe it would be far better to re think the way things are done eg Prisons cost the tax payer a fortune .. it would be far better to force prisons to be self sufficient in generating their running co

I agree with you there. This country has massive debts due to the spending of the last government and, as we all know, if you spend and run up debts the time will come when cuts have to be made to pay that money back. The government is no different from the individual in that respect, go mad and spend and it will come back and bite you in the bum one day. :D

However like you I believe there are many areas where ridiculous amounts of money are wasted and cuts should be made there.

No we didn't. The Tories staggered over the finish line with the help of the Lib Dems. And would anybody have voted for either party if they had known what they would get up to? Was any of this bash-the-poor stuff in their manifestos? I don't think so.
