  • In Japan, we make raw potato salads using finely shredded potatoes... you finely shred them, then soak in water (change the water a few times too) to get rid of some of the starch. Then mix it with whatever else, tuna, daikon (mooli), etc for a refreshing salad.

OK, so you probably wouldn't want to be changing water several time when the heating is broken and it's freezing, AND you probably would want something warm rather than a cold potato salad, but it can be eaten.

as a fully paid up union member and public sector worker i may not be practically prepared in terms of stockpiles and candles but boy am I prepared to get out there and do what we can to save not just our jobs but the massive range of individuals and businesses that will suffer if this government are allowed to get away with what they are threatening
People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

I predict it won't happen :D Thatcher was determined to emasculate the unions, and one very shrewd way she had of doing that was to encourage poeple, whose families had always rented, to buy their council houses. Her thinking was that once poeple owned something, they wouldn't be able to afford to strike.

Hands up anyone whose family could afford to lose weeks and weeks of wages while the main breadwinner goes on strike this winter.

waves....hands up...waves.......I'm the main (only!) breadwinner...personally I could survive for months if I had to...

I agree with you actually that Thatcher was very shrewd encouraging people to buy for that reason actually...

I've always thought "If you've got nothing to lose...then you might as well go in with all guns blazing". Its when you've got something to lose that you start debating whether to/when to.....

All I know at a personal level is that I've had various income problems over the years that werent my doing and I had "nothing to lose" at the time these happened. When I eventually bought a house I thought "Now I have something to lose" - so I was delighted to be back in the position (many years later) of having nothing to lose any more - because I knew it had "tied my hands" for some years - as I had to be aware of protecting what I had. Doesnt apply any more:D. I often read the Employment Board very conscious that I personally could deal with a bad situation by thinking "I'll take whatever action I need to - and if the employer doesnt like it - SO...sack me..I simply don't care" - but VERY well aware that most people arent free to think that way....

I certainly think that it suits the powers-that-be very well for people to be tied up with mortgages/trying to get mortgages and/or having to support other people besides themselves (ie children). If people are in that situation - then they are very conscious that they CAN only take things so far before they have to "shut up and put up". Hence yet another reason for being delighted I'm clear of mortgage/debt on the one hand and yet another reason for not having children on the other hand - so no-one (employer/Government/etc) could stop me leading my life as I saw fit for long (ie being free to protest about problems - without having to worry about how I was going to find some food to put in someone else's stomach...).

So - yep...on this one...I AM in full agreement with you P.P.
  • Rachbc, agree 100%!

I am also a public sector worker and union member who would be willing to have a tough winter to strike. This government want to tear our public sector services to pieces and we need to show them that we will not stand for it!
  • My sister used to eat raw potatoes all the time... that and frozen uncooked chips!!

Anyway... I got prepared and the first potato I peeled each time was picture of a face.... by the time she realised I was peeling spuds she'd run in and ask for a potato face... and I always had one ready for her!!!

She LOVED raw potato... she's got 2 children 26 and 12 months old... and is 3 months pregnant... so never did her any harm!!
We spend money we don't have, on things that we don't need, to impress people we don't like. I don't and I'm happy!

Specific instructions purlease re those shredded potato dishes.....:D
  • I have always eaten bits of raw potato, not whole ones, just bits and pieces sliced off whilst they are being peeled.

;) Felines are my favourite ;)

Anyway i'm due in Feb, we are not allowed a bad winter, I have a fear of giving birth at home/in the toilet

I had the same issue last year (I was due New Year's Eve). I'm sure that the reason my little girl was so late was that I had such a fear of not being able to get to the hospital due to the bad weather that my body point blank refused to go into labour. She was "evicted" 13 days late. We had to drive through quite a heavy snowfall to get to the hospital for the induction though!

Each night I'd go to bed and look at the snow falling and think "don't you dare, baby!"

that is the instruction! ha ha. ok, shred the potatoes (slice thinly then chop them into thin strips), you can even peel the potato down with the peeler then cut the peels lengthwise.

do the same with daikon (moolee?) or carrots, or whatever veg)

Soak all the veg in cold water, changing the water a few times, you want to get lot of the starch out of the potato.

drain veg really well, add small tin of tuna, then mix with the dressing... dressing could just be mayo, or something like this:

    2TBSP mayo
    1tsp lemon juice
1tsp Worcestershire source or Leicestershire source
    1/2tsp salt
    chilli powder to taste.

eat quickly, to enjoy the crunchy texture.
