  • Thanks for those ideas. Thing is it's not just cold it's a draught that blows down the stairs. The loft hatch isn't the source and all the windows are double glazed. I can only assume it's the design of the house and how the air flows - as there is a large window next to the stairs (also double glazed and can't be opened) that chills the air as it passes down to the living room.
I have some admittedly thin curtains up so I guess I need to try investing in a blackout blind or similar to try and keep the heat in.

You could be talking about my house there, i have the exact same problem in my house. It is a pain in the bum.
Ill have to invest in a curtain as well i think :(
  • ive cleared out the understairs cupboard ill be using as my stockpile.

found out a throw for use on my bed/sofa.

tidied out the useless crap in the spare room, and bought my first piece of xmas food today. a box of those festive friends animal biscuits!! :T

I got a tin of quality street for xmas... half price £5 in MrT :D

I am also secretly stockpiling for DS and DS's GF who move into their own place soon... Couldn't hide the big pack of half price pasta but have hidden the rest - hope the ungrateful little bug*** appreciates it - at least I know he will have food in the cupboards :)
  • ooh, like this thread. i lurked on the old one but never posted.

my plans are pretty much hat everyone has already said except i am also going to encourage next door neighbours to keep their heating on and light their fire as much as possible because the heat comes through to our living room and the boys' room.

can i ask a question? how much should a small coal bunker cost and does anybody have any idea where i can get one? tehre is a shop locally that sells them but it is £120 for a small one!!!! is that normal?
"it's better than a poke in the eye with a pointy stick" - my dad, regularly throughout my childhood when I complained about something being too small/not perfect/not tasty/not what I wanted. he was right every time. :D
  • Every third week when my DH is on his late shifts (3-midnight) I have to catch the late train home from work. I finish work at 6pm and by then have just missed the 5.45pm train so have to wait for the next one at 8.40pm. Sat there on a cold platform is not nice.....so tonight I have been looking for nice thermal "bits" to keep the chill off. Thermal vest/t.shirts and long janes, socks and hat scarf and gloves. Hopefully in a couple of weeks time I will be prepared and will be toastie warm. Roll on when I pass my driving test.
    £2 savers club. No.90. Aim £500.

I could always tell when my neighbours had their heating on... and i found that the less i had mine on, the more they had theirs on :D WINNER :T

I wish this was the case in our flats. WE are two up two down but the flats behind us are the same layout so we only join together by effectively the back wall of both bedrooms - neither of which have a radiator on them. Im ground floor so have a flat above me and my bedroom joins the flat to the side. We dont get very much heat salvaged from their heating though :(:(

Most definitely going to try the foil behind radiator ideas and am planning a primani trip this month to get pyjamas sorted for us all.

Am really worrying about my bedroom. the radiator stil doesnt seem to be working no matter how much Ive bled it but then other days it does. I cant afford to not have the heating on in the winter in there or my new baby girl will freeze!
    Time to find me again
  • still going through my winter prep, still lots to do.

I have a question my double galzing is old and i can not afford to replace yet, the seal on the outside is cracked, was wondering what it is I can use myself to fill the crack at the top of the window, is it putty? or something else?

and also where is the cheapest place to get thermal blinds?

using my blog to keep track of everything now, as no matter where i keep my lists etc the kids always manage to find them and use them for drawing or aeroplanes lol

    I still have to ;
    • Make thermal linings from cheap fleeces for bedroom window curtains
    • Buy runners for dining room & kitchen laminate floo
    • stock up on cold and flu, cough mixes, Calpol, prescription meds
    • Get thermal blinds for kitchen
    • need curtain rail put up in dining room so can hang thick curtains _ very drafty
    • replace dining room radiator ( don't know if I can afford before Xmas - will see)
    • winter service the car - end of the month
    • winter boots for big bit and lil man, ooh and bubba now she is walking
    • clean garden
    • clean gutters
    • power cut /emergency box

I love this thread and the timing is perfect for me. I know that its spring here in Oz, going into summer but that means i can remember with the prompts from this thread that i can stoke up on the things i will need for next year in the sales. I know my winters are not like UK winters, but the houses here are not insolated like UK houses so evenings are COLD! We dont have central heating, we dont have double glazing and the floors are covered with cold tiles.

So in the sales this year Im going to be looking for one more gas heater, we have one but could do with one more as we are using an oil filled radiator but its costs a fortune to run, gas is so much cheaper! I also need a big draft excluder as the front door is so poorly fitted, we've used blankets this winter but if i can get something purpose made it will look so much better.

I could also do with a couple more throws to use whilst sitting in the loung and my hubs needs new slippers.

I also need to start a power cut drawer because we seem to get a fair few here in the summer when ever one has their aircon on, so i need to get this sorted too.

I hope the sales are good this year!! as money is tight!

    Hi
I love getting ready for winter
I have been stockpilign things from ALDI like their powdered milk.
I buy teabags, coffee and hotchocolate in bulk from Ethical superstore - they have had a good sale on and I paid £6 for a kilo of hot chocolate and £7 for 440 teabags
I have bought some treats from Aldi too Limoncello for desserts and amarena cherries.

I have started buying presents got both my grans done, nice smellies hampers from Tesco reduced to £4 I have ordered loads online but deliveries seem really slow at the moment I have been waiting months for some things. I aim to have all my shopping finished on our Boots points night in November - and thats the last time I will go into a shop before xmas - I hate town at xmas time - I like to spend free time out with the kids at local shows and going to see santa etc

I work in a restaurant on the weekends (as well as my usual job) and they throw away the candles that have been lit on the tables after the customers have gone so some of the candles are only half used so I am I taking them home to use.

I am starting to have a big clear outand have sold lots on ebay.

Going to france next week so going to see if I can pick up some marrons glaces to put on my Delia christmas cupcakes becuase they are about £40 a box over here and only Dlia can afford that for cake decorations!
