Preparing for winter II

thanks for the tips, i doubt our landlord would be willing to do anything at the moment for us. see we work hard and pay a lot for the property but when the walls started becoming soaking wet and black mould appeared everywhere we kicked up hell (and quite right so imo) we got the council involved who said it was a disaster waiting to happen basically and ordered her to do repairs. now she has served us notice to leave today given us 2 months notice, that takes us up to 19th december (what a lovely christmas we wil have!)
i know theres the warm front available but even if we applied now it would be too late for winter. there is shutters on the ground floor but nowhere else. we tried double sided tape and cling film over the windows and then hair drying the cling film to pull tightly so it was in effect a kind of secondary double glazing but because the window was so cold it loosened the cling film and we ended up hair drying the cling film every morning!Even a stopped clock tells the right time twice a day, and for once I'm inclined to believe Withnail is right. We are indeed drifting into the arena of the unwell.0 -
wrightk - sounds like you've got a miserable landlady. Some of these BTL landlords should be forced to live in the properties they rent out! Sorry about your notice to quit but hopefully you'll end up with a better property. In the meantime you may find that thicker polythene (possibly from B & Q) put across your windows and fixed with really strong clear heavy duty Duct Tape will do a better job than cling film, although obviously you won't want to spend much money if you're not going to be there much longer. (Still, you can always remove it and take it with you when you go!)0

thanks will try that...
its upsetting you work so hard ( i work 40+ hours a week as a community carer) to live in a property and pay £600+ per month to live there you just want a property that you can enjoy, not one which makes you and your children ill.Even a stopped clock tells the right time twice a day, and for once I'm inclined to believe Withnail is right. If you have to leave so soon huni, would you be better off looking for a nicer home, or trying to get your local council/HA to help find you one?
Maybe BubbleWrap would work better thickly taped onto the coldest windows? Or if you did the entire window recess rather than the glass possibly, hth.
Good luck, its horrible being cold and draughtsMy light may be on, but that doesn't always mean I am looking at the PC - I am far more likely to be cuddling or feeding Tianna atm, so please don't think I am ignoring you if I don't reply quickly
Our Precious Baby Tianna has now joined our Family, she is much loved and very welcome, xxx0 -

Now is the time to talk to your local housing association! The fact that the house you live in is unsafe AND the fact you are now being virtually evicted, they have to help you to find a house, hopefully with them which will be cheaper. See it as a blessing, and you will hopefully find something better and cheaper!£2 Savers club £0/£150

thanks a lot.
it might be a bit of a blessing in disguise by the sounds of it and we can remain in the property until after christmas (as they will never get a possession order before then)
hopefully we might be able to get a HA house or somethingEven a stopped clock tells the right time twice a day, and for once I'm inclined to believe Withnail is right. We are indeed drifting into the arena of the unwell.0 -

I have a vision of you floating along the street in a cloud of bubbles holding aloft candles!:D
I tell ya, it's not funny I've got every scented candle ever made and then some, at the last count I had a carrier bag and a huge box full.
I can't chuck'em or give them away because if I did and then we had a repeat of the seventies power cuts I would feel a complete banana.0 -
wrightk - I don't really have anything useful to add, but I just wanted to offer my sympathy for your situation. I had exactly the same problem in my previous flat (damp, black mould, landlord refusing to do anything, council involved...) - just hold on to the thought that it will be so much better when you get a new place - I'm grateful every day during the winter that I now live somewhere where the rain stays outside the flat!
I've been rather struggling to get into the 'preparing for winter' mindset, but today one thing changed me into winter mode - I bought a bag of soup mix (the stuff that's a mix of various types of lentils and grains). My mum used to use it to bulk out soups and casseroles when I was a kid, and I now use it every winter, so the sight of it in my cupboard means "it's winter". Daft, I know!Back after a very long break!0 -
The past couple of days have been freezing here....and next week snow on the hills is forecast! Since I was travelling across north Scotland, it made me realise one more winter related thingy...buy a warmer winter coat! I was chittering!
Coming across the Struie road in the wee bus was something else, the wind lashing the windows, clouds hiding the mountains, and some of the burns in spate within half an hour.
Brrr..."Ignore the eejits...it saves your blood pressure and drives `em nuts!"0
