Mobile contract length

Hello,

Was trying to upgrade through Orange. The contract is due to run out in November (24 month contract) but had decided to drop down to an 18 month contract.

They said the fact that I still had three months left on my current contract meant this would be added to my next deal, fair enough I thought, so that would make it a 21 month contract.

However, when checking the small print, it said the contract will run out in November 2012. Well thats not 21 months, thats another 24 month monster.

Tried to get an explanation of this from orange but no luck so far (I havn't signed any contract yet, I was doing it online and noticed the small print before I confirmed the deal).

Someone told me that the contract lengths advertised aren't actually the real contract length, and that if you sign up for an 18 month contract its actually 24 months, and so on. It sounds a bit far fetched but considering the above is there some truth in this?

    No truth at all.

A contract is legally binding on both sides! So if you sign a contract that says minimum 18 months the other side cannot magic it into a longer deal without your agreement.

    Hi Luke,

Cheapest free Samsung Wave deal I could get direct from Orange on 18 month contract was £37.50/month online on Dolphin 40 with 800 min/unlimited texts.
Buy Samsung Wave from unlockedmobiles.com for £280
    Virginmobile 800 min/unlimited texts 12 month SIMonly for £15/month
After 18 months, Orange contract has cost £675. The Unlocked phone and Virgin SIM card route is only £550. Worth considering the SIM card route even if you need to borrow initially. You can also buy the unlocked phone and transfer your SIM now whilst you let your current Orange contract run its course.
  • I ended up getting a decent deal with Orange but via phones 4 u.

    Samsung Galaxy S, free of charge, 18 month contract, £27.50 a month, 500 mins, 3000 texts, 500mb internet, unlimited wifi + e-mail.

Could have got more minutes, or cheaper with another network, but where I live (just outside Aberdeen) Orange have by far the best coverage, and that appeared to be the best deal I was gonna get with them on an 18 month contract.
