SarEl - you beat me to it on the computer thing. What does everyone imagine lawyers and barristers do? Scratch on parchment?!!
Sorry everyone, I work for a law firm in their IT department so know what a big deal their systems are to them :-)0 -
Unfortunately it looks like she will no longer be helping folk here thanks to the treatment from one other poster.
Oh!!!???? What happened?
I had noticed SarEl seemed to be a bit absent the last day or two...:(
Come back SarEl - all is forgiven - we ALL get detractors and those of us who "come in with a good heart" do sometimes think "Why DO I bother?" and get upset/take a break for a few days/leave...
I hope you havent left - please say you havent:D0 -

Ah...right..I've caught up now:D. Ah - I see....
Well - my take - many of us have useful contributions to make - some because we know the law better, some because we've been through a similar experience...a variety of reasons.
All useful "takes" on a situation in combination give the "full picture" and help the OP (whoever they are to decide). Few of us have a good grasp of the law - obviously we do need people like SarEl in order to specify what is and isnt possible within the law. The vast majority of us don't know the ins and outs of this.
Sometimes it helps an OP to get sympathy expressed - because no-one much ITRW empathises with the predicament they find themselves in.
Some of us have more of a "trade union" type take on things and have a reasonable idea of how far an employer will "push it" - or whether something is just a "try-on" but if the employee "stands firm" the employer might back down ...(errr...that tends to be where people like myself come in.....)
There are many angles to some queries - and many different helpful takes on how to view a problem.
In the case of employment problems - then...yes....this means we are on a Board here where a good grasp of the law is invaluable and we do need people like SarEl.
So - I think there are many of us who have another poster or two on MSE that we would like to "shake warmly by the throat" - but one learns after a while to just mentally groan and think "Oh no - not them again......" and hope everyone realises that the person concerned is "Personal detractor - so please ignore". I am NOT saying anyone on this Board is my or anyone else's personal detractor - PLEASE NOTE THAT FACT. Maybe sometimes we all mistake a different viewpoint for a "personal detractor" - other times its pretty unmistakeable (for instance when someone who never posts on a thread comes on specially and starts going "x said this and this and this (quoted out of context/turned on its head/etc - and they're a nasty person") - at which point you KNOW for sure that they are a "personal detractor".
But - most of the time - its just different viewpoints being expressed and different takes on things.0 -
congratulations on your decision SarEl, you have made the right choice. It confirms the strenght of character that you have.

You said it DVS........expressing YOUR wish, I don't recall being asked if everyone else wished the same! How do you know an OP wants what you want? Who made you the "wait to post until xxx others have had their say first" Police?
Personally, I'm quite happy for SarEl to be the second, third, fourth AND fifth post on every thread when she feels she has something of value to add.
So, back to the topic of the OP, thank you SarEl.Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it.0 -

I suppose we do invite it at times - or at least the system does. The gowns and wigs do look utterly ridiculous at times (especially the wigs!). One of the great advantages of my field is that I only have to wear them in an actual court and not for tribunals.
But for the curious, yes, we do have computers and they are often far more sophisticated systems than other companies of similar sizes would have. They have to be - we can neither do without them not can we have any risk of hacking. In fact our Chambers is considered quite "groovy" by quite a few others - all of us carry hi-spec ThinkPads, and actually rarely use paper at all. They are more secure, can be used anywhere paper can, are more tranferable in information terms (no pointless typing up from scrappy handwriting), and you can while away the hours sitting around courtrooms (which can at times be longer than time spent in the courtroom!). I consider mine to be a member of the family0
