There has been an increase in costs, fraud, personal injury claims and the cost of covering uninsured drivers so costs have gone up.

    You need to shop around.

Also do you have any NCB that within 2 or 3 years.
Most companies will accept it 2 years old.
A few will accept it if it's 3 years old.
Do you have any from before where you have the proof? (renewal notices).

That's certainly one answer, there are usually two views put forward on these sort of posts, one from people associated with insurance, and one from the customers.
The other side of the coin though is record profits for some companies, a £1500 bonus paid to each employee at Admiral this year, and in the words of the advert, someone has to pay for the champagne at the shareholders meetings....
I think you have to look around a lot, prices vary enormously, it helps if the company has a good business model, and is profitable, or otherwise they are still making a loss and increasing premiums to cover it.
  • I have one years no claims for my car and have proof, but that will be nearly 2 years old when i get home

So anoying, i just need something for when i get back, prefferably something nice, but ill have a banger if its only thing i can get! grrr
  • Also already having a 3k bike back home is extremly anoying if i cant insure it, although i spose i can ring back preivious insurers and just try and blag them to re insure me for same price

For the record I'm the latter (I work in IT).
It does annoy me a little when people resort to personal attacks about vested interest because they don't agree with your views.

It would be nice if there could be polite debate about the facts without assuming that someone MUST have a vested interest if their view are different from yours.

If other people's views differ from mine then I question my own posistion and consider whether I might be wrong and might need to change my mind,. That's why I learn an awful lot.
It seems to me that a lot of others posters never question their own posistion and refute anything that doesn't coincide with their own view and anyone that doesn't have the same view........well the only explanation is that they jsut must have a vested interest, it's simply not possible that they hold a different view.

That should be ok with most companies.

There are a number of tricks you can try.
If you have a low value vehicle and don't want to make any claims, then try a large excess on fully comp.
Try adding an older driver with good history (female is better) to bring down the premium. It doesn't matter if it transpires they don't use the car.

In my area there is a "bike safe" course thats free with the police for one day that gives you a discount.
You could consider courses to get your bike premium down.
Some will take time, hence I mention bike safe as it's only a day long.

If you are questioning your own views, does that mean you agree their are profits, even record profits, in car insurance in this years figures?
  • yeh i always wanted to do bike courses but never got round too it. And now i cant do them because i have no bike to do them on! haha catch 22 or what! and all my friends bikes are either as powerful or more than mine!

Currently looking at cars, more borring but if i have one for a year, insurance will be cheaper at 21. :(

And !!!!!ing about it is unlikely to change the situation. Unless you are willing to become an MP and push for a maximum profit /bonuses they are allowed to have.

Best thing to do is help OP to mitigate the costs.

OP's NCB should still be valid. OP can also add a named driver who is older and more experienced to the policy and see if that will drop the price.

    Good luck OP.

It could be made worse by the way the OP is entering his information on the quotes for instance if he has answered a question about his residency eg have you been resident in the UK for the last three years and he has answered no, this will put the majority of Insurers premiums through the roof. I'm guessing he is a UK citizen so with some Insurers if he rang them and explained he is a UK citizen but has been on a gap year (If this is correct) some of the Insurers would then be happy to quote without a loading.

The way to discover who would be competitive if the above is the case is to answer that he has been resident and then contact the Insurer to explain his circumstances. Make sure you take a note of the name of the person you speak to, time and date of the call.
