Gibraltar, Luxembourg, Ontario are places we've been that aren't your traditional beach holidays that are within your budget.:)

What do you like to do on a holiday?

    Laze on a beach?
    Sightseeing?
    Combination of both?
How long for? (not a lot of point suggesting long haul if you've only got a week - IMHO that is).
Is the £1500 your TOTAL budget (i.e. including spends) or is that just for flights & accommodation?
  • Trans siberian railway.. May cost a bit more then your budget but what a trip that would be for you.
    one of the famous 5:kiss:
  • Trans siberian railway... ( wonder if i can send her on her own :rotfl:)

    Sounds interesting though.

It was for 2 weeks 1500 per person (flight and accomodation)

Idea would be few days at a beach but with lots of other things to see and do.

    Chaing Mai.. seems interesting

What about a holiday to Cuba, have 10 days at a beach resort, and 3/4 days in the beautiful and amazing Havana? Many tour operators do a 'twin' thing where you can do 2 different things over the space of 2 weeks

Wonderful place to spend a few days as part of a SE Asian tour - but unless you are really into your Buddhist temples, not enough to keep you busy for two weeks.

Nong Khai in North East Thailand. It's smaller, and more laid back than Chiang Mai. The air in Chiang Mai is polluted with trillions of 2 and 4-stokes! Crossing the road is a ricky business! None of that in Nong Khai.

Fly to BKK. Stay in a Riverside Hotel.
There's loads to do in BKK, but just stay a couple of nights.
Overnight sleeper train to Nong Khai.
Stay right on the mighty Meekong at the Mutmee guesthouse.
Perhaps cross the Friendship Bridge, and have a few days in Vientiene, the capital of Laos.
Sleeper back to BKK for a couple of nights, and home.
    Terrific!

Crossing the road in Chiang Mai is certainly a life and death experience! I think the problem is that the locals are so calm and believe in reincarnation that they aren't frightened by the prospect of being mowed down by a tuk-tuk.

I love Thailand but haven't made it to Nong Khai yet. As you say BKK is a 2 night city. It's a fabulous place but best done in small doses. It's so hectic that after 2 days you'll be eager to escape the city.

The only problem is that Thailand has become increasingly expensive over the past 5 years. It's still excellent value compared to Europe - especially if you avoid the mass tourist traps - but I'm starting to look at Cambodia and Vietnam for cheaper and more "interesting" travels.
