I shop weekly online for food now. Like other posters here, I see my DLA as paying for this.
I live in a city, Tobruk, but there is a pharmacy that will pick up a prescription and bring me the medicine free. And shortly after I fell ill I started having milk delivered. Unfortunately there are no real local shops in my neighbourhood any more.
Luckily after a previous illness scared me I stocked up on non-perishable food and now when I buy online I overstock slightly, just in case.

clemmatis, I feel that having milk delivered is essential and I would really miss it if it wasn't available but unfortunately with supermarkets many dairies are stopping deliveries.

Looking out for offers (of things you normally use) is something I do online every week and stock up on non-perishable goods - you save in the long run.

I use flora butterly and when it is on offer I buy quite a few and put them in the freezer - there are many spreads that are fine to freeze.

tobruk, I have a feeling that if my milkman stops delivering the whole service will stop. I did manage for a while with milk ordered online from Sainsbury, delivered weekly, it was always in good condition, it kept well, but the local milkman's milk is a lot better!

Thanks for mentioning freezing Flora, I hadn't thought of that (I buy Flora too). I also am not quite good enough at using offers to stock up.

Something else I do is buy cheese when it's on offer as this also can be frozen. If you like you can cut the block and wrap before freezing so that you don't have too much in the fridge at any one time so that you don't waste.

I tend to buy "The One" as it lasts longer once opened and freezes well (the lower the fat content the better milk freezes apparently) and you get 2x2 litres in Farm Foods for £1.50 (other varieties available).

I get bread from Farm Foods as well 2 x Hovis any variation for £1. I get one for using & one for freezing. My neighbour has a corner shop and sends his wife there every day to stock up!

I too am disabled, I am also, now, too ill to go to the shops. Before I fell ill I could walk to my local Tesco Metro, as I became ill, had to go to nearer shops which cost more. Munchie, there were no travel costs involved!
I get Disability Living Allowance, it's a benefit paid in recognition of the fact that for disabled people, living costs more. (Inability to shop is not though grounds for getting DLA.)

Do you not have a friend who you could ask to take you to a local iceland and do your shopping and get it delivered for free if you spend £25 or more, you could both do a shop there and get the food delivered

Do you have a dial a ride service in your area?

The reason I ask is the chargers are very reasonable and if you are unable to do shopping yourself you can sometimes get a assistant abet at a small cost and notice given. I sue to help do this for some people myself

Dont know if this is national or not but my Morrisons help some disabled people, staff take them round or they supply motorised scooters

there are shops that are local to me of course, the kind you mention (one spar, one tesco express) but they are not the kind of local shop tobruk was talking about, who will deliver to regular customers. All the local butchers shops closed, the last one left closed two years ago. The local bakery closed more than three years ago. The local greengrocer that would deliver closed about two years ago...

    here's what tobruk said
Obviously fresh food is a bit different but in the village there is a fruit and veg shop and the owner is more than happy to deliver to me for free! Same as the delicatacen in the village - the owner has told me to give her a phonecall anytime and she will deliver on her way home! The local butcher has also told me to call him anytime if I need anything - he actually delivered some eggs for me on his motorbike one time!

as I said and you quoted (bold added to quote)
Before I fell ill I could walk to my local Tesco Metro, as I became ill, had to go to nearer shops which cost more (addition, these were a Tesco Express and a Spar). ....

    I hope this helps...
