Barclaycard application

Hi,

I'm new to this forum and really I just need some advice.

I recently applied for a Barclaycard and received communication from them on 20th August '10 confirming my application was successful and my card was ready and waiting. All I had to do was sign the enclosed credit agreement and return it in the enclosed envelope, which I did without delay.

Today (7th September '10) I arrived home from work to a letter from Barclaycard dated 26th August '10 saying my application had been declined? I do not understand this as my credit rating is fine and I have never had a problem getting credit cards or personal loans in the past.

How is this possible? I called them and they said they had carried out further checks after agreeing my card and now I'm not eligible for one? Is this legal?

I also don't understand why it has taken almost 2 weeks for the rejection letter to arrive.

Any advice is welcomed.

Thanks,

Richard

Did they ask you to include any documents with the returned, signed, form?

No, nothing. They said in the letter my card was ready and waiting and all I had to do is sign the agreement and my card would be sent out.

Then, 2 weeks later I get another letter rejecting my application with no rhyme nor reason.

Nope, the second letter just says that my application did not meet the 'required criteria' after the first letter had already said my application was successful. It's really confused and annoyed me.

Once you sign and return the agreement they check several things, including trying to make telephone contact with you and / or your employer.

When I took out my Barclaycard Initial first time around (not the one I currently have) several years ago it arrived a couple of weeks later with the then maximum £2,000 limit. Within a week it was blocked.

This was because they tried to call my employers telephone number and they were told I don't work there - as I had just started and the person who picked up the phone didn't know me or bother to check.

Thankfully back then they weren't so cagey about their reason for declining people etc so I sent them a copy of my contract of employment and they re-activated the card :o

Seems now they do it all before sending the card out, perhaps?

How odd. They certainly haven't made any contact with me and the information I put on my application was 100% accurate.

It's very frustrating because I imagine this application will now go down on my credit rating (whatever that is) as a bad point.
  • Call them and ask why it happened.

It won't go down on your credit report. It will show up as a search, but no one will know you've been declined.
  • What did it say when you applied online? Did you get an instant decision or a "we'll let you know" message?

When I applied it said I had been successful, then the credit agreement arrived in the post a few days later. I signed and sent it off and was expecting my card through the post. Instead I got letter declining my application.

I had a though earlier, could it be because I work for Connaught?

That's weird. I applied today and signed the credit agreement electronically. It then said I'd been successful. Definitely worrying.

    What's Connaught? :o
