They probably have security chips in which means you're basically stuck with a main dealer.
A decent, preferably independent, key cutting place will have a machine that identifies the chips and they may be able to recommend a place that can clone them for you.0 -
It isn't extortion. The cars would have been sold new with two keys and possibly a third, plastic key.
When you bought the cars you should have factored the absence of these keys into the price and bargained accordingly.0 -
You could check with Timpsons.

They may also be expensive, however.0 -
We were in Timpsons yesterday and saw a sign about Car Keys. Enquired about our Escort key-They stuck it in the machine to see if it could be copied and said it can be copied and would be £70-The sales advisor then gave us a 15% off Priveledge card from behind the counter for when we decide to have the key copied.Mind you, ours is an old P reg Escort so don't know how that price would compare to a a 51 or 55 plate car.0

You can get chipped keys for most cars cut at a proper locksmiths, the trade do just this. As long as you have the original for them to read.
What they can't do is supply the central locking type fob and key.
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Is there anyway that key cutting specialsts can code on new transponders (a la PATS) without a key to clone? In a Panto style "Oh yes we can" :j

For those with old bangers, and only one "chipped" key:
1) Remove chip from key
2) Superglue to transponder
3) Any subsequent key can be a standard £5 blank, (eg. Ford) off an old model.

Come on then, elaborate for the benefit of everyone.;)
These things change rapidly , it would be nice to know what is possible as against a few years ago:beer:I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Ok I'll try and answer both questions as fully as I can.
Yes You can code in new keys to a ford pats system even when all keys are lost although the dealers cannot do this and will charge you for a full lock change and pats unit.
I would not tape a transponder to the ariel as this will invalidate your insurance as you have effectivly bypassed the immobiliser!

Depending on the company you go to depends on what they can do I can make keys and code them into pretty much any vehicle on the road including coding in of the remotes with or without keys to work from and even when the dealer says all locks and the ECU need replacing like on Saabs and quote a massive £1600 when you have lost your keys!0 -
Timpsons do Ford Keys for around £75 when the dealers were asking £80 or more.
Also check your local keycutting/shoe repair places since some of those have the machines to do car keys. With Fords (or mine certainly) they had problems getting the right chip with the right key type but they offer them for £30.
It won't be a remote locking one for that price - you are talking £180 for one of those and the only people I could find to do that (who I could check to be trustworthy) was the main dealer.0
