    It sounds like swapping due to ram constraints.

    reboot, don't touch it until it has settled down, then go into task manager, performance and note and post your commit charge, peak commit, and physical ram total.

    Some or all of these could be removed from startup to speed things up, removing them frees up ram and cpu, and stops swapping at boot (assuming your peak commit charge is greater than installed ram).

    control panel, regional and language options,languages, details, advanced, tick the Turn off advanced text services, ok

    Disable JavaQuickStarterService (jqs.exe) - control panel, java,advanced, misc, untick java quick starter and place icon in tray, and untick everything under debugging

    uninstall nokia software if you don't need it to remove this and other bloatiness

    these can be disabled in services.msc, assuming you don't use them

    distributed link tracking, indexing,remote registry, ssdp discovery, webclient, , windows media player network sharing, tcp netbios (unless you need file sharing)

    If you are happy with the classic windows look, you could also disable the themes service

    Even though hjl does backups, it's safer to use this to remove them, because it disables them at startup, rather than deletes the underlying file
