Is there any other paperwork I should take when visiting the States? I'm visiting my girlfriend for 2 weeks, have return flights obviously, but someone suggested I should get a letter from my employer confirming they have granted me leave and that I will be returning to the UK after, a bank statement to prove funds, an itinerary of what we might do and address I will be staying at.

It's my first trip over, is all that wise/necessary? Are they really that paranoid I may stay?!

Before we were married, my husband used to travel to the US all the time to visit me (he's English, I'm American) and he never had to provide anything other than his passport and answer a few questions....though thinking about it, this was pre-9/11 so may be that things have changed. I'm sure it cannot hurt to have that documentation available just in case - if you say you are visiting an American girlfriend then it may set off some alarm bells and secondary questioning.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

Bear in mind that the US site is likely to be 6 hours behind BST so you could have up till 6am to apply.
  • You have until 5am to apply.

Highly recommend that you use firefox and if the site times out just keep hitting "Try again" don't hit back or anything, it eventually goes through.

Just managed to register the gf!
:exclamatiTo the internet.. I need to complain about something!

took me about 50 minutes to do page 2 page. firefox refused to load the link at all. got through on safari immediately, then got stuck page to page. applied for my whole fam at 11.30 when the site was working normally. :)

what rubbish . unless they suspect you of working, or attempting to get work you have nothing to worry about . i know a guy who used to visit his GF minimum 4 times a year , and was applying to live and work in USA . never had a issue getting in . you would have to give some well dodgy answers , to make them suspect you might be over stay your leave .

People are allowed to visit friends and loved ones in the USA without having to justify that they are up to no good . you have a return ticket , that's proof enough you will be returning . any more things might be a case of "the Lady does protest too much "
Better in my pocket than theirs :rotfl:
