Flashed by a Speed Camera. What next?

Got caught by a speed camera coming out of Manchester on Saturday (b*gger.) I was 10mph over the limit when I was flashed. (I know, I know, my fault. I wasn't paying attention etc, etc. I've accepted I was a moron and moved on.)

I was driving Mum's car. Assuming there was film in the camera (or it's digital), who does the letter/information go to? Mum's the main driver but there's four of us insured on the car. Do they send it to Mum and rely on whoever was actually driving the car to own up and take the points and fine? (Or do that course thing I've heard about.)

And how long does it take for any sort of letter to come through about it? (And is there any indication on the envelope when it'll be? In case I can swipe it before Mum gets to it. I'm 23, been driving for 6 years without incident until now. But I live at home, my parents are still my parents and I cowardly want to avoid any parental "talks"/guilt/finger wagging.)

Thanks.

Forget the Insurance angle. It'll be sent to whoever is the registered keeper...on the v5 I think! I'd also think twice before opening your Mum's mail! I think you're going to have to take the lecture!

I'm pretty sure it will go to the owner of the car, and I presume you go from there as to who was driving etc. Also got a feeling it has to be with you in a certain time period eg 21 days (but not 100% sure)

From memory, (not me, a friend got snapped), she had £40 fine (was a few yrs ago), and 3 penalty points on her license.

But - whilst I can see where your coming from re swipeing the post,( its illegal, thou I'm sure we've all done it) but it will have to be declared to the insurance company, (even thou your a named driver)if it wasn't and someone had an accident it will invalidate the insurance, - your have to check whether it needs to be reported to the ins company now or when the next policy starts.

There is a chance that the flash went off without a film in it, or it was another car.

In all honeslty be better to come clean when/if the fine comes through.

Apologies if the advice seems hazy, some bits sure on, other not sure - need to check x

It will go to the registered keeper of the car, and I think they have 14 days for you to receive it, best to own up now I think as it will effect insurance and the keeper will have to say who was driving.
Excel Parking, MET Parking, Combined Parking Solutions, VP Parking Solutions, ANPR PC Ltd, & Roxburghe Debt Collectors. What do they all have in common?
They are all or have been suspended from accessing the DVLA database for gross misconduct!
Do you really need to ask what kind of people run parking companies?

Letter will be sent to registered keeper and should arrive within 14 days. She will be asked to identify the driver. You cannot swipe it and reply unless you forge her signature:eek:

  • To be honest, I don't think I'd really have the guts to open Mum's mail. I'll own up. Especially now as I'm not sure who the registered keeper of the car is. It could be Dad. Thanks for the advice. I'll own up tomorrow, just in case. Especially if it'll affect insurance or something, I didn't realise that could happen.

    Thanks again.

As stated, letter to Reg Keeper posted to arrive within 14 days (delays in the post don't often provide a get out) which is in 2 parts. Notice of Intended Prosecution and statutory requirement to name the driver.

6 points for failing to name against (normally) 3 points for speeding so not much point in her ignoring it. I think the fixed penalty for 10mph above is £60 + 3 points but as your speedo probably over reads your speed up to 38mph you may be offered a speed awareness course. This avoids points, fine and the need to tell your insurer but you have to find the time and pay for the course.

Why not wait and see if the letter actually arrives, it might not. If it does own up, if it doesn't - least said soonest mended. Only a couple of weeks to sweat. ;)

If I were you I would own up now. Your parents should appreciate your honesty and you might be surprised at their response. If the letter arrives on the doormat they will get a shock and may not be very pleased.

Let them know before the NIP arrives, they'll think better of you:T

    Also makes a change from the usual version that gets posted on here;

The NIP MUST arrive within 14 days. If the RK does not receive it within 14 days, then he/she has a perfectly good defence. However, the S172 request for information must still be responded to.

If and when something arrives, OP, take this to pepipoo.com.
