Car Trade in Help

Remember Parkers is only a guide, as is Glasses and CAP, they are a starting point not a valuation that is as exact as a House valuation for mortgage purposes.
Some traders may be interested in a deal, mainly so they can get rid of a car that is less sellable for one that is more sellable.
With that in mind they will be happy to sell a lomon like an Alfa for a more retailable Audi.
Remember also that the dealer will make money from commision when he sells you finance, which he won't get if you trade in the way you are thinking of.
The only person that can answer your query is the dealer, just don't expect to get the full £9k that you want for your Audi,, the dealer is in business to make money, not friends.
I have one question why would you want to trade down from an Audi to an Alfa? We all love Alfas, but they aren't a long term ownership proposition and they depreciate a lot more than an Audi.0 -

My thoughts entirely, the Alfa dealer may well welcome the OP with open arms.
There surely are not that many people daft enough to want an Alfa.;)0 -

I have always wanted to get an alfa, i know they can be dodgy and unreliable and expensive to fix, however although i love my audi, iv had it 3 years now and fancy a change, i would only have the alfa for 2 years, until the original loan i took out for the audi is paid off, by which time i would be hoping the alfa is still worth 5k ish, when i could then sell/trade it in and put towards someting new.
I know its a bit of risk in terms of it being an alfa, however people who love cars should at least own an Alfa once in their life, the fact i am still young enough to get away with a coupe and it is only for 2 years will hopefully minimise the risk of things going wrong and costing me a few quid.0 -

Once would be once too often for me, but it's your money.;)
I like to know that I am going to reach my destination without the help of a recovery vehicle.
At least you know that Alfa's are crap.:)0 -
Don't listen to what they say on Top Gear, they have the money to buy what and when they want.
The reason you want to trade in rather than sell the Audi and buy something else isn't because the car has a loan secured on it by any chance, if it is the loan company might not like the risk of having a loan secured on an Alfa.
They may even want some deposit, as finance companies have some strange rules and regs.
Not having a pop, I did something similiar a few years ago, when after 3 months of getting pulled over I decided to sell my Impreza WRX, got offered a trade-in against a brand new Legacy, but due to the reduced equity in the car and the fact that the Legacy would depreciate more I had to reduce the length of the finance deal.
That car was the last one I ever financed, just works out too expensive.
If you reckon your Audi is worth £9k then why not just keep it for another 2 years, as it will probably be worth an awful lot more than £5k then, also if the Alfa is up for £9k, it probably has atrade price of £7k, and therefore would be worth more like £3.5k in 2 years.
Stick with the Audi, you know it makes sense, and especially as most of the posters on the thread have done something similiar in our younger days and regretted it, finacially at least.0 -

Nah bigjl, the loan is a personal one so luckily dont have any issues with finance companies etc i just cant be bothered with the hassle of selling and timing it so i am not without a car.
i know financially i would be best off sticking with the Audi, i am just at that point where i am having a bit of car boredom and fancying a change, ill think on it longer regarding the Alfa, i have always wanted since i was a kid for some reason but know if i put the sensible head on it is a bit risky and probably not the best move.
Cheers for the advice though guys, you have gave me some food for thought, although has taken any excuses away that i may otherwise have had if i still go ahead and get the alfa, i will no doubt regret not listening to you all when im sitting on the outside lane of the M8 with hazards on and smoke belting out the engine!!:rotfl:0 -

OP,
Your only young once, if you want an Alfa, get one!! I think the new ones look really nice! Do it before you get tied down with a family (assuming you don't already!) I get a feeling some of the posters on here are middle aged and only drive 'sensible cars' Have fun whilst you can. You know what your letting yourself in for, so won't be shocked if anything goes wrong!!
Good luck!

The thing is janninew the board is called moneysavingexpert, not pistonheads, so I think the advice is relevant, the OP will take a financial kicking if he sells in this way, and no I am not middleaged, but I have done the same thing, the last time 7 years ago, and bitterly regretted it, the financial loss would be substantial.
He only has two years to wait before his loan is paid, maybe the OP should "pimp" his Audi a bit, to keep his interest in it.
Then spend the next two years saving and get a nearly new Braera, and yes I am unsure of the correct spelling.0 -
Hi folks,
Apologies if this sounds like a daft question, but if my cars trade in value is 9k (as per parkers) would any dealer be willing to sell me a car worth 9K, taking my Audi as a trade in? (i.e basically swap my Audi for the Alfa in their forecourt)
In theory my audi will be worth slightly more in terms of the dealer selling it on (9k is its trade in value, maybe 1k less than dealer price) so would this be enough to tempt them into a swap for a similar valued car?
Anyone had a similar expierance or have any advice, it would be much appreciated.
Cheers
(ps apologies if this was posted in wrong section earlier, im a newbie at this )
Speaking as a motor trader here...
(a) they wont want your audi. They will simply get someone in the motor trade to underwrite it. They may well have a bit of margin to work with on the car you are buying off them, so they'll add that on to make the deal more
(b) the trader wont value your car at £1000 less than its retail price. They'll be looking around £2500 gross markup
(c) They wont otherwise care that you are buying a car of similar value as they will simply be 'trading your car on'.
And personally,
If you really want an alfa, go for it. They're only slightly quirky and reasonably reliable. I've had three now - a 156 v6, a 147 JTD and a 156 1.8. All great cars in their own way. Certainly way more personality than pretty much all the german stuff i've owned.0
