Car Trade in Help
Hi folks,
Apologies if this sounds like a daft question, but if my cars trade in value is 9k (as per parkers) would any dealer be willing to sell me a car worth 9K, taking my Audi as a trade in? (i.e basically swap my Audi for the Alfa in their forecourt)
In theory my audi will be worth slightly more in terms of the dealer selling it on (9k is its trade in value, maybe 1k less than dealer price) so would this be enough to tempt them into a swap for a similar valued car?
Anyone had a similar expierance or have any advice, it would be much appreciated.
Cheers
(ps apologies if this was posted in wrong section earlier, im a newbie at this )

I've done it before, most main dealers will. (remember they paid less than £9k for their £9k Alfa)0

Dealers have to make a living. Why would they take your car in exchange for one of equal value?
They will take your car in part exchange.
They will take your car in exchange for one of a lesser value and may even give you cash back if there is a big margin.
Some will buy your car for cash.
IMHO, you need to use glasses guide for an accurate valuation. You will be very fortunate to be offered the Parkers valuation by a dealer. You could try webuyanycar for a valuation."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Your car will be bought at TRADE value.
The car you buy will be at RETAIL value.
£1k could be a very meagre margin here, I think you'll be in for a shock when you approach the dealer. No incentive for a dealer to do a "swap", remember a Parkers valuation is normally wildly inaccurate too. You need CAP or Glass for a "real world" valuation, Parkers is used by Arthur Daley types, and amateur driveway "experts".

Missile,
I know dealers have to make a living, however as kilty has pointed out, the 9k they have the Alfa on at, they probably bought/exchanged for a value of 7k, and although the trade in value of my car is 9k they will probably sell for 10/11k, so for an alfa they paid 7k for they could make a profit of £4k, id say thats not too bad a deal for them?
I take your point about glasses guide, although not too sure id trust webuyanycar from what ive heard about them, although does no harm to get a quote i suppose.0 -
Things aren't that simple though.Missile,

They take your car in, if they want it on the forecourt, they'll have to test it (unless it's practically got a new MOT), HPI search, prep it, account for it etc. It's not quite the simple "+/-" figures they appear to be on first inspection.
Go and talk to them, but you might be suprised if they turn you away, or only offer you a meagre trade-in value. That's capitalism I'm afriad, (and I detest capitalism.)

Cheers Andy, i guess the reason i posted the question, rather than just went ahead to the dealers was because i knew it wouldnt be that simple, my car is in good condintion though, FSH, MOT'd and has 1 year roughly of its extended warranty, so imho could be easily sold on their forecourt, however i know things are never that simple when it comes to making money, especially with car dealers, was just wondering if anyone had had any luck in doing simalr deals in the past.0 -

I think you are confused.
The ticket price on the windscreen in a car dealers showroom is not the same as valuation. Use Glasses, parkers or webuyanycar to value BOTH vehicles.
Please spare me your lesson in second hand car dealer ecconomics :rotfl:"A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

I dont think im confused at all, what i am saying is that if a dealer offers me x amount for my car, they are obviously going to sell it on for more than x to make a profit, and also if they are selling a car for x amount on their forecourt that they would have paid less than x to get it, again to make a profit. (in theory making a profit from both cars)
As i said before, parkers trade in price for my car was about 9k, and parkers price for buying the alfa from a dealers was 9k, although simplistic, again in theory the dealer will make a few quid profit when it sells my car on, aswell as making a few quid profit from the alfa, which it will sell to me for more than they paid for it.
I wouldnt dream of giving you a lesson in anything missile, i only teach adults :rotfl:0 -

Have you not asked or attempted to sell to a friend or via an add?
If the car is as you say in v good condition it may be better sold to a friend or privately..
Mate of mine had same problem last week at audi..
He was after a new A4 and was offered 2K below the asking price for his old (2006) A4 ..
Car was worth 11K in books Audi offered 9K , he sold it to a friend for 10K..
i know its not always that simple but worth a look...
By the way good luck with your Alfa.0
