Gutter repair in Teraced house , over conservatory with no side access

Options
Hi All

I am at wits end , we have had a broken gutter since Jan, and have had a friend (Gutter repairer by trade ) promise for the last 6 months that he will come fix them for us.

but as he describes it is a very complex job due to there not being side access to our property on the one side. so essentially they want to do is take our neighbours conservatory ( flat roof ) off , and build a scaffolding over our big 3m to 4.5m high conservatory with slanted roof. using a 7m timber joist to then work across.

or alternatively ,create a simple scaffolding , that goes into our neighbours window .... just to allow a quick fix.

the gutter is broken off on the side where there is actually side access.

now this is a lot of info . .but i was wondering , in a terraced property is this really this difficult ?

can anyone offer any advised on any way around this..

i am going to get quotes tommorow on getting this done professionally , but i can see this is going to cost a fortune if its as difficult as my friend states.

PS . finances are really tight due to a little one on the way , so any MSE advise really welcomed.

Many thanks
Ian

  • I assume hiring a cherry picker is not an option?

Take one or two of your conservatory roof sheets out and put a ladder up

why don't you ring a scaffolder up and get them to have a look
i had a scaffold platform built over a conservatory which cost around 300
but they did have access on both sides

Its certainly an option if there's access for the brute. :D

I agree totally and thats what I do for access for gutter clearing and painting at my own house. Trouble is for a tradesman theres the spectre of the Working At Height Regs to contend with as issued by the HSE stasi under dafty Prescott. They can make what should be a simple job a nightmare. <Stands back and awaits the usual flaming for actually daring to question it. :D>

Yup , we are the middle of 4 terraced houses , would the be able to go over the roof of most double storey houses all the way to the other side ? I didn't think so ....

our conservatory is a old fella , has what i believe to be quite fragile pull up/down blinds .. but hell if there is a easy way to get them conservatory panels out i am all ears :)

I agree. You would need to be able to get the cherry picker round in front of the conservatory so that it can operate over it.

Depends on how its constructed. Mine is wood with the roof timbers routed to form an inverted tee shape thus providing a support for edges of the roof panels. These are held in place by a capping strip that is screwed into the centre of the tee and is fitted with rubber strips to hold the panels in place. Panels are polycarbonate as well which makes them very easy to lift out. The trick is getting to the screws on the capping strip to remove them.

  • This will reach 15m high and stretch 6.5m out, but is only is 780mm wide and will fit through a garden gate. Between £160 and £200 per day to hire

    HELP.
This has nothing to do with the subject of this thread, but I have been trying to post a screen shot into a message for someone to see.
My question is: How did you post this picture here?
Your answer just might help me post my screen shot picture.

I used to have a terraced house and that had a gate into the service lane at the back. Most terrared houses have some sort of lane access, so the hoist idea may well work.
