yes the tyres are the original, it was a motobility car, had about 6k on it, its done another 30 in the last 18 months. its an automatic if that makes any difference. no we dont stomp on the brakes!

the two that need changing are the passenger side front and back

to much parking on kerbs then

yep, its my partners car. when he parks he slides the car up the kerb so that its right on the kerb. Ive told him a thousand times that its going to ruin the tyres but if i park it and its inches from the kerb, he says im 'way out' and goes round to put the wing mirror in!
  • 12 months ago I was quote £250 for pads and discs on a golf from KF, £200 from another large retailer. £95 from the local garage and £120 from another local garage. Same numbers came up this summer for my focus.

For 4 tyres and pads and discs I paid £338 last summer from the local garage (part of the good garage scheme). So I'd say its a normal price for a chain but you could save £££ by ringing a few local garages for quotes.
  • 2 garages quoted me £90 for front discs and pads for my Pug 206 and another quoted £110.

Both current discs have a lip on them but my pads are still 4.5mm according to my last service.

dont be fooled by the good garage scheme the only gaarges that are signed up have to agree to use a certain brand of lubricants and additives owned by forte products
if you go on to GGS site you will not find a single negative view on any garage it has nothing to do with good service etc
the garages have pay to be in the scheme and only use forte products

Hi, we have a nissan note. Took it to kwik fit today for the free brake check as at the last service it mentioned that brakes were worn and tyres were getting low. So today kwik fit say that 2 of the tyres need changing as they are below the legal limit. The other 2 are ok (although the max useable tread on one is the same as one which is too low??).

In addition the front break discs and pads need changing.

So, the quote from kwik fit is £99 for the same tyres (continental) or £46 for their own equivilent. Plus £231 for the pads and discs, with a lifetime guarantee.

The quote from the local Nissan dealer (we phoned them) is £98 for the tyres (or £80 each if we wanted to change all 4), plus £180 for the discs and pads but we are waiting for them to get back to us to confirm whether theres any guarantee involved or whatnot.

So the question is, should we change all 4 of the tyres as a precaution anyway (they have each done 36k miles), or just 2. Should we go for continental or kwik fits own tyres.

plus do the amounts sound right? We dont know anyone in this area and dont know any 'local garages'. I used some 'bloke' for my servicing in January, he changed put a new tyre on for £10 and I didnt get anything in writing to get my book updated or to show I had a service so have been put off 'local garages'!

    Thanks

you mention the 'brakes are worn' is that the pads or discs.
Pads are relatively inexpensive. You ought to ask them to show you the damage if there is any to the discs. run your fingers either side of the disc yourself. If it feels smooth their fine.if you can feel roughness and see rust the pads wont be contacting to the disc properly.
Generally (not in all cases i know) you will get through about 3 sets of pads to every disc that needs replacing

Ive always gone for the budget tyres starting at £30 dont accept the fact you have to get top end tyres like continental and pirelli

Always ask them to show you the damage

    Very good point.

Half a cup full of thinners, and a "squeeze" of ATF into the fuel tank.

Much better than any Fort! product......

Op if you aren't sure / happy about it then take it to someone else who a friend / colleague recommends for a second opinion.

    A lot of people don't like Kw!k F!t.
    We have 3 near us.
2 are not too bad and 1 i wouldn't touch with a barge pole.

I suppose a lot of it depends on what they think they can get away with?

I'm also interested to know what people think about having two new tyres down one side of the vehicle and a part worn tyre on the other driven wheel (or have i misunderstood you op?)

would never go to kwik fit personally. i had a lucky escape with them. I used to get all the work done on my car by a friend who has worked in car mechanics for years.
Not knowing much about garages i took my car to kwik fit as belt was slipping.
They told me i needed a new cambelt quoted me £300 for it

Took it around a few garages found my local one and he said it was my fan belt pulley slipping. i think it cost me £70

  • There's going to be a bit about Kwikfit on next Thursday's Watchdog - might be worth watching it.

I also drive a Nissan Note SE 1.6 (automatic) and I've just had a pretty awful experience with Kwikfit and vowed never to go back to them. I had the front brakes (pads and discs) replaced and they rang me to tell me one of my tyres needed replacing as the tread was below the legal limit. (I told them to go ahead with that and wish I hadn't).

They wanted to clean my rear brakes for £39.50 - I told them I was happy to drive around with dirty brakes. (the rear brakes were fine and didn't need replacing).

When I got the car back the new tyre hadn't been cleaned up and was covered in white sealant and had a missing valve cover. Also I had to pull the handbrake up to around 90 degrees before it started gripping. When I took it back to get the faults rectified the mechanic told me he hadn't touched the handbrake (but he must have done to see that I had dirty brakes LOL). I had to leave the car there for a whole day to get it fixed and when I went to collect it they still hadn't bothered cleaning up the tyre and putting the valve cover on it. I ended up cleaning it myself and getting a new valve cover from Halfords.

I've emailed them complaining about their poor service but haven't had a reply yet (it's been over a week)
