virus? spyware?

i was browsing the net using firefox, then suddenly someone started speaking in the background (something like do you want to buy any thing then a couple of minutes later, it happened again, but this time it said dont you want to buy anything) so i downloaded and installed ad aware 6 and updated the defenitions and did a scan and it found about 183 bits of spyware and since i havent heard anything since

i was wondering if it was a virus (as i havent checked yet) or spyware?

It lists online anti virus software, give it a go. You will then know you are virus and malware free.
