  • It does seem high, especially if you are or have been a single working parent (most lone parents are) My sister's husband was on minimum wage, she looked after their children and they lived on very little more than she gets now they've split up.

But when they were together there were two people capable of earning a wage. Even on the minimum they could have worked opposite shifts and taken turns with childcare responsibilities. I suppose the figures take into account that this common way of increasing income levels is just not available to people on their own.

    Oh my word !!!

Is this seriously how much a single parent gets if they dont work ?

No disrespect to the op or any other single parents , im just shocked that the government pays single parents £200 for not working !

They also get their rent paid ?

Many people working a 40 hour week get just a tad more than this !

    Shocked....

My reference , as you will notice was to the amount the GOVERNMENT pay , i did not at any point post anything against the op....neither did i post anything disrespectful to any other single parent !

The news is full of stories in which it says there will be a shake up of benefits.

It is blatantly clear in my post that i stated " NO DISRESPECT TO THE OP OR ANY OTHER SINGLE PARENTS"

The problem is that under the current benefit rules, one parent in a couple can choose not to work and that couple can still claim benefits for that lost wage. Amazingly, many would rather take that option than choosing work and working together on a childcare rota as mentioned above.

You can see why Labours old school MP Frank Field, didn't agree with Brown's Tax Credits, as he said they would create a "provery trap" just like one the OP finds herself in now that she doesn' get child tax credits. Not the first to be in this position and sadly, she certainly won't be the last.
RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.
