The disregard for child support was introduced in April 10.

Work your way through the Entitled To (turn2us) benefit calculator to check your entitlements. The LHA direct website will help you understand your LHA entitlement. The last time I checked, a single parent with 2 kids will get around £34 per week child benefit, £65 income support and around £100 per week tax credits, plus full council tax rebate and most or all of their LHA depending. If the rent charged by the landlord is less than the LHA maximum allowance, the tenant gets to keep up to the first £15 difference, too.

    Oh my word !!!

Is this seriously how much a single parent gets if they dont work ?

No disrespect to the op or any other single parents , im just shocked that the government pays single parents £200 for not working !

They also get their rent paid ?

Many people working a 40 hour week get just a tad more than this !

    Shocked....

    Just to clarify HB/CTB...

This assumes the recipient of maintenance is to either the claimant or a partner of a claimant.

For HB/CTB, all maintenance from a former partner is disregarded if it is wholly in respect of dependant children for whom the recipient is responsible. If the recipient is responsible for dependant children, but maintenance is in respect of the recipient, only the first £15 per week is disregarded of the recipient's element. If the recipient has no dependant children, none of the maintenance is disregarded.

Normally I dislike most of your posts...but I have to agree with you here. It is shocking the amount single parents with children who don't work are able to claim in benefits.

But thats not relevent to the OP so we should probably knock it on the head here :)

Many people working full time on a decent income would get considerably less than that!

Don't take my word for it - put the scenario through the Entitled to (turn 2 us) website. This is what it was the last time I checked earlier in the year.

The reason I found this out is because my friend is a landlord who rented their property to a single mother with 2 children and found some bank statements she discarded. However, the property was trashed by the next tenants on DSS so they sold up.

Yes, it's more than the single parent could possibly earn to support the family (someone on the national minimum wage nets around £185 per week). In my friend's tenants circumstances, she received £200 per week (£10,400 per year) plus child support, plus full CT of approx £100 per month and LHA of approx £180 per week. Overall, it equates to a taxable income of about £25k, twice the national minimum wage.

Some tenants live in properties whose rent is higher than the LHA and have to top it up out of their own income. Many single parents do not receive a penny in child support.

Blame this on the system, not the claimant - high rents and low wages caused by lack of housing, high immigration, lack of decent jobs, etc.
  • My brother and his girlfriend split up earlier in the year, she gets £65 JSA. £98 CTC ( 2 children) and £33 CB each week! full H/B and C/T also.
She also gets maintenance off of both the fathers about £80 pw. And moans that she cant manage on nearly £280 a week with no rent to pay!!!

    Yes.

He must be making a fortune for you to get that amount of child support.

£350 for 2 children only equates to £1750 net per month, which is just over £30k gross PA .
So I would have thought that is about the going rate :o

(ps just replying it is not an attack or route for argument or anything)
