I've just emptied my DD's lunchbox. The blue freezer pack was still part frozen and her leftovers were well chilled.

That was a 6pm, it was made at 8am.

Your child probably won't be eating much anyway so there is less to worry about. But in keeping with the topic, egg sandwiches should be made with salad cream not mayo. Tastes nicer and the preservative in the salad cream stops the egg from going off. Don't forget the much maligned jam sandwich. Don't make complicated things, keep everything simple. In fact a jam or cheese sandwich and some fruit (apple, pear, small banana etc) sounds wonderful.
  • I really fancy a jam sandwich now...

Make the sandwiches with frozen bread or rolls then you don't need to faff around with ice packs and you can put anything in them as the bread keeps the filling cool. You need a good bread knife to cut them though. Works for me every day :) The bread is nicely defrosted by lunch time.

Colleague of mine used to buy a bag of 24 bread rolls and make them up with spread & ham slices, then freeze them individually in bags. Took one out of the freezer each morning and it would be defrosted by lunchtime for her to eat.

I used to take cheese & marmite sandwiches to school in my packed lunch (secondary school), there was nowhere to leave it so carried it around in my bag all day. This was just in a tupperware box, no coolbag or anything. Yes it got slightly "warm" but I'm still here to tell the tale :D
