Packed lunches, no fridge ideas

Not sure where to put this post.

DD has just started p1 (was at pre school last year) and will need to take packed lunches again. She did last year but even i was getting sick of making cheese sandwiches.
I would like her to take ham sandwiches, yogurts etc but with no cold place to keep lunch bags I never send her these things for lunch. Personaly I wouldnt eat a ham sandwich after it had been out of fridge for about 4 hours. Am I daft, should I be just giving them to her?
I do use the cool pack things, in fact have a wine bottle one and it great for putting things inside to keep cool. but they just dont seem to keep things cold enough plus take up room in lunch bag.

Anyone else think schools shoule have a fridge for packed lunches?

I don't have a fridge in work, I have an insulated bag then i put an ice pack in. I have found them to be cool enough. Its maybe your brand of bag/pack

Get one of those blue ice packs, not the foil ones, they're much colder yopu can get extra thick ones, although I find the thinner ones work fine.

If you make the sandwiches all at one time (say Sunday evening) and freeze in daily packs, take each sarnie out in the morning (with maybe a frozen yoghurt or drink) they do stay fresh enough until lunchtime. Of course, it does restrict you to ham/cheese - maybe tuna? not sure about that one.
  • If you don't want to give her a freezer pask then freeze one of those fruit juice cartons, or if she takes a bottle freeze it, or put some ice cubes inside. Oh, and keep her lunchbox in the fridge or freezer overnight too.

I use frozen frubes. They keep everything cold and by lunch time they are still cold at lunch time so DS1 tells me.

Or just use an ice pack and an insulated lunch bag/box.
  • I do use an insu;ated bag and the foil frozen pack. Just dont like the idea about it sitting in the heat/sun all morning.
  • I take those things with me and I never put anything in the fridge at work - it sits in a plastic bag by my desk - I am fine and not had any problems.

But if you are concerned, then get a lunch bag which will take an ice block - or why not put the bag in the fridge over night and then just put the lunch in it the next morning

I'd actually rather have mine sitting by my desk but made fresh each day, then out of the freezer, also, can't stand the thought of eating a sarnie which was made the night before either - but that's just me! :)
  • Sainsburys had some lunchboxes in the other day that you put into the freezer, think they had little cool packs sewn in to keep everything extra cold.
Although having said that, some of the other suggestions do work really well and thousands of kids eat lunches everyday that are either kept cool with a cool pack or have none at all and are just fine. :)

  • Why don't you hop over to the bento thread on old style for ideas? :)
There's also the packed lunch ideas thread, packed lunch that doesn't need a fridge and ambient healthy packed lunch ideas

Hope this helps a bit! Oh and lakeland do little flexi cool packs that work really well in lunch boxes and personal coolbags.
