Use of a Garage

Out of 23 houses in our street, I'd say barely 5 or 6 keep their cars in them.
The rest are a melange of children's toys, bikes, packing boxes, chest freezers, fridges, exercise bikes, gym equipment, drumkits, and more......0 -
Idon't have a garage, My parents do though and it just has junk in it, when we were younger it was bikes/toys now its a weird mix of stuff like sofa, steroes, baby stuff like pram. It has only ever had a car in it if a car has been off the road for a while and not in daily use.MF aim 10th December 2020 :j:eek:MFW 2012 no86 OP 0/2000

There are only two houses in our street which actually house their cars. The rest have been either converted into living rooms or are used for household storage. My tiny car just about fits into our garage with all the other items stored there, including a big freezer. However, I think there ought to be a law stating the minimum size for a garage, and that ought to be large enough to accommodate a standard size family car plus adequate storage space. If that happened, maybe all these get rich developers wouldn't be able to squeeze so many homes on such a small space. Modern homes are generally totally inadquate for the storage space needed by the average family.0

unless you have a car that costs more than your mortgage deposit, living space is too valuable to waste it on a garage.Chocolate*fish wrote: »c. A garage to convert into more living space / bedroom
and why?

Get a double garage so you can have a car and storage
Never worked in practice for us but working on it.
For extra living space we can build above or in the garden but got a bigger house than needed to start with.0 -
Two points on garages that are probably worth mentioning.
Each time a car maker brings out a new model it tends to be slightly bigger then the outgoing car. Cars are growing over time. A garage built to take a typical family car 30 or 40 years ago might not be big enough for a modern family car. Some older garages may therefore not be suitable for keeping a car in.
The second thing is detached garages. Converting them isn't really an option.
The reason why I use the garage for keeping my car in is because I don't use my car for commuting to work. It is common for me not to use my car from one weekend to the next. If it is obvious that it is not used in the week (by the fact it never moves) than it might be more of a target for thieves or vandals.0
