What has suprised you this year.

I've had an allotment for 1st time this year, although didn't get it until May time. But I've had some successes:-
Started picking french and runner beans today.
Courgettes have flourished.
Got kale, swiss chard, and perpetual spinach thriving.
Enjoyed some lovely beetroot. Leeks progressing well, and onions too.
Got some squash growing.
Hardly had to buy any lettuce/leaves this summer.
Have had disasters with brassicas, but have changed my methods with them and have some young plants set up for overwinter.
No joy with peas again - not sure what I'm doing wrong there either.
Greenhouse - this has been a disaster for past 2 years. Small 3" cucumber and handful of tiny tomatoes. Tomatoes thrived outside better for the 2nd year in a row.
Have been pleased to get a herb garden established.
Is great to fill my freezer full of produce for the winter months.
...and to learn from my mistakes for next year.0 -
This year was the first I'd grown anything other than toms and strawbs, funnily enough strawbs were poor and my tomatoes got blight!!
However courgettes were a big surprise and I mean big! french and dwarf beans have been good, radishes, spring onions, lollo rosso and cucumbers all still producing, raspberries threatening to take over lol but the fact that I actually managed to grow rhubarb from seed is probably the thing that surprised me most. Can't wait til next year.Sometimes not moving backwards is as much an achievement as moving forwards is on other times. (originally posted by kidcat)
It's only a bargain if you were going to buy it anyway!0
