Many thanks 'JasX', The box is out of warranty so the SKY people will not take it back. The standby light is on and when I press the remote there is no response from the Box 'remote is ok'.
If I was to take the Hard drive out, can this be used in other similar machines, enclosure?

Basically you need to work out the exact model box you have from the back Thompson/Samsung/amstrad have all made them over the past.
Google to find a step by step guide for pulling the box apart, varies from box to box but following a guide make sure you get it right without breaking anything.
you then need to hook the hard drive up to your PC, my preferred method of doing this is take the side off and use a spare power + IDE or SATA cable to wire it into a spare socket if you have one, particularly on Sky hard drives which usse an unusual formatting protocol its best to wire directly and not rely on the percularities of of any particular enclosure or converter.
from there Sky copy+ will let you backup its contents.
you can then put your original drive into another sky box using the SAME format (there are two called 'big endian' or 'little endian') see copy plus for details
Follow guides on the copy+ site you can also:
reformat your original drive in the other format (big or little endian) for use in a different 'type' of Sky box.
copy the contents to another hard drive, perhaps one already installed in another working sky box (save you taking one completly to pieces as you'd just need to get it apart enough to get a cable to its sockets)
or copy the contents to a new drive and put that into your working sky box (eg to upgrade its capacity).
you could try this either with the new box you get from Sky or purchse a 2nd hand one somewhere if you feel happier reducing the risk that way0 -
Thank you so much again jasX, and every one else.
I am now looking for my hammer and Chisel to start working on this damn box.
thanks again
