That sounds like a Netbook to me rather than a laptop (the screen size is what makes me think that), and Netbook's aren't the fastest bits of kit in the world (certainly slower than laptops when compared alongside each other, and miles slower than the desktop variant of the same spec).

256MB of RAM is just about enough to get XP working, but when you combine that with a processor that doesn't even have 3 zero's on the end and a hard disk drive that is probably off the Ark in terms of technology (again, the size is indicative that it is old school hardware) then it comes as no surprise that XP is running like a 3 legged asthmatic dog.

It was released with XP PRO but not sure about the SP3 upgrade.

SP3 isn't the problem, your current hardware specs are the bottleneck.

This probably cost well in excess of £1000 when new(prolly around 2003).

    The manual is here.
It's entirely possible that Sony used Micro DIMM in this machine. So a 512 MB module can cost around £40. Easily fitted though. Examples here and here.

Use CPU-Z to check the exact configuration.

    Drivers and other info here

I have the OS disc should you need it.

Just noticed that the search indexer is still there although I stopped it using services.msc and then disabled it?

    still got these

    C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jqs.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\SearchIndexer.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe

ctfmon - control panel, regional and language options, languages, details, advanced, tick the Turn off advanced text services, ok

To speed up menu's, run regedit, browse to hkeycurrent user\control panel\desktop, and change menushowdelay from 400 to 20.

Disable JavaQuickStarterService (jqs.exe) - control panel, java, advanced, misc, untick java quick starter and place icon in tray, and untick everything under debugging

Disable machine debug manager(MDM.EXE) - IE, tools, internet otions, advanced, disable script debugging

these can be disabled in services.msc, assuming you don't use them

distributed link tracking, indexing, remote registry, ssdp discovery, webclient, , windows media player network sharing, tcp netbios (unless you need file sharing)

igfxtray isn't essential to be loaded at startup.

If you are happy with the classic windows look, you could also disable the themes service

    Try this

    http://www.pcwintech.com/cleanmem

If you don't plan doing any printing on it in the short term, you could disable the spooler service too.

Then reboot and post your peak and current commit from task manager before loading anything (IE etc), what's the speed and boot time like now?

Superb assistance Donnie & Closer. Thanks.

I will be carrying out the mods over the next couple of days (time permitting).

Actual price originally was approx £1300 (Not a bd guess Donny. The brochure is a little exagerated and it only expects it's users to live for a max of 10 years. how sad.
The VAIO TR is not merely a machine, but also a partner for life.

The manual was very useful too.

Good (because it is below 256MB)

    Total = 151212

    Peak = 171224

    but could be better.

Just disable the spooler service, don't delete, re-enable if you ever need to print.

    These can go

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpybotSD TeaTimer] C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\TeaTimer.exe
    O8 - Extra context menu item: Google Sidewiki... - res://C:\Program Files\Google\Google Toolbar\Component\GoogleToolbarDynamic_mui_en_89D8 574934B26AC4.dll/cmsidewiki.html

    Indexer could be disabled too.

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\SearchIndexer.exe

Should be booting and running fast now?

Don't disable the Tea Timer entry if you are actually using it. :) Of course if you have already uninstalled SpyBot, then yes you can remove the Tea Timer entry.
