Hi All,

I have a very sluggish laptop.

Presently downloading 35 critical updates from Microsoft but here is the hijackthis log before doing so.

Is there a clue as to what is causing the lappy to be so sluggish and hang every time I try to do something with it?

I obtained this secondhand and dont have the original Op sys disc and have no idea what the previous owner might have done to the machine.

I have since installed Armour, Ccleaner, Asquared and a couple of other progs.

Post the machine specs, or at least the make/model.

I used to be a fan of Online Armor, but find it not necessary especially if you're using a router.

If you didn't know, It's now owned by Emisoft, who produce, IMO the useless A Squared, which I see you've also installed.

I'll leave it to 'Rik, but I see that SpyBot Teatimer is running.
    Move along, nothing to see.
  • Also has AVG been left behind from the past?

I assume that Online Armour is only superfluous if there is a firewall on the router. How would I tell because all I did when I connected the laptop was type the number from the bottom of the router. No password or anything else.

What would you suggest I use to replace A squared?

Should teaTimer be stopped as I know this makes things drag a little.

Yes, AVG was removed as it had been PARTIALLY removed previously.

    Should I delete that file?

256MB of RAM is your main problem. Bung in the max 1GB and you'll be laughing. Or at the very least bump it up to 512MB.

I appreciate that won't help but still shouldn't be this sluggish.

How easy is it to install memory into a lappy. Done it a few time with desktops along with other cards, swapped HD's and added 2nd HD's in the past but no experience with laptops tho I do have a set of star bits (:))

Most XP systems with 256MB will crawl unless you do a clean install. You really do need 512MB minimum.
It's easy, the RAM slots are either in a hatch under the machine, or sometimes you have to remove the keyboard, but it's not tricky, especially if you have done the work you describe on PC's.

remove online armor, asquared, spybot, install avast, remove all those bho's and toolbars, googleupdate, googletoolbar notifier, jqs, jusched, ctfmon, run avg removal tool, disable searchindexing, turn on windows firewall, all routers act as a firewall, providing you have a local ip address of 192.x.x.x (ipconfig from the cmd prompt). Install cleanmem.

When your peak commit charge in task manager is below 256MB, it should run fast again, assuming you remove all that bloaty security software. It should get down to below 130MB (after a reboot (which should take 40-60 seconds)) if you do the above, and have removed any infections.

Should look something like this when you've finished

That sounds like a Netbook to me rather than a laptop (the screen size is what makes me think that), and Netbook's aren't the fastest bits of kit in the world (certainly slower than laptops when compared alongside each other, and miles slower than the desktop variant of the same spec).

256MB of RAM is just about enough to get XP working, but when you combine that with a processor that doesn't even have 3 zero's on the end and a hard disk drive that is probably off the Ark in terms of technology (again, the size is indicative that it is old school hardware) then it comes as no surprise that XP is running like a 3 legged asthmatic dog.
Remember kids, it's the volts that jolt and the mills that kill.
