I've only got one socket in this room, they near each other...

    Eh?
In response to imho. the OP is presumably connecting by ethernet (see ref to 'wired router' in the original post), so changing the wireless channel is not relevant.
OP, please confirm that you are using ethernet and not an ancient USB modem. If the latter, it is obsolete and possibly the cause of your problem.

You could always reset your router or update it.

    Tried the reset.

Is it worth updating the router? It might not be the router?

Go into Google and type in 192.168.0.1 that should be your router as its same one as mine. You put in admin and Password is password. See if there is a option to repair. I updated mine recently but i saved my old settings first.
I still think you should call Aol . You have to go through press button 1 or 2 but you get a techie who only deals with routers. The call doesnt cost much.

Oh didnt see that you have reset the router. I would double check all the leads that go to the router. Sometimes Firewall will stop connection but you said you do get connected for 10 mins. I wouldcall Aol it would have been sorted by now .

Is it connected by ethernet (not USB)?
    Model would help.
If you've done a factory reset then you will have to set the connection up from scratch again anyway.

macman i leave it up to you to help. problem with mine was i was connected but only "local " and Aol helpline helped me. It could be a program stopping connection or like i said a loose lead somewhere. I would switch router off and leave it for 10 mins and see if that helps .
  • sorry, I havent read all the posts, but I had major problems with AOL years ago, was fine with Dial up but when changed to bb was a nightmare, spent more time on the phone and trying to log on again then using the bloomin thing - eventually I wrote to them - I had diarised every phone call and email and said that they had broken the contract as it wasnt fit for purpose etc and they agreed! contract cancelled, moved to Talktalk - another nightmare but now with BT and ALOT better - it depends where you are - I am in a very rural area so BT best for me but dont tolerate them or give them anymore of your dosh, get rid - any problems go to Otelo which is the telecomms ombudsman, they sorted out by Talktalk problems after months of stress - excellent service and free - good luck

This is the option of last resort, the price is months of stress. Understand the problem before ditching the ISP. Ditch them if they will not deal with a problem, but inly if you understand the problem

connecting your router to the BT test socket behind the master socket faceplate????
How do I check the ADSL filter???
When you say all active sockets what do you mean, the socket with the router or every socket in the house? Because its always been just the router one.
No noise on the line or phone problems.
Active socket means any socket with anything plugged in. You must have a filter on every active socket [except the one with the modem if you understand why not].

What does the bit in red mean?

I thought you had to have one on the router socket?

Strangely enough the filter is a straight through connection on the ADSL side. Just the wires. It is anything which is not ADSL which needs an ADSL filter to isolate it from ADSL
