Having massive trouble with AOL, I can't stay connected to the internet (their tech help is useless).

I get on & I get chucked off after about 10 mins. Then I can't get back on & I have to do option 4 when you can't sign on (repair the AOL adapter) & then cut all power to the PC & router & then after a couple of mins I can usually get back on (for another 10 mins):mad::mad:

I'm in a contract with AOL so please don't tell me to leave them as they are useless (I know that) but I do like the interface. I renewed & got into a contract again with them when they offered it cheap(ish) to me. I'm in one of those few areas in the UK that can't get cheap BB & its about £17 pm (I think), anyway AOL shaved a couple of quid off so I contracted with them.

HELP

Any ideas what could be wrong, this has been going on nearly a week. I'm on a wired netgear router.

ETA I haven't tried their tech help because I know they are useless & al they will do is get me back on, I can do that myself. What I can't do is stay on!

Why don't you try connecting directly without using AOL's horrible clunky interface? You don't have to use that to connect to the net with an AOL broadband account, just use a decent web browser like Firefox or Chrome.
You can certainly get broadband cheaper than £17pm even on a non-LLU exchange (for example, Plusnet Value would be only £12.99 even on a Market 1 exchange).
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

I can't get on internet explorer when it cuts out, so I can't access the internet at all.
As I said I'm stuck in a contract with AOL, but when its up (must find out when) I will think about another. I've been with them for 10 years:eek:
I don't want to loose my email address:(

Well if you don't want to lose your email address then you will be with them for another 10 years, indeed with them forever...
It take 10 mins to set up a GMail address, 5 minutes to inform your contacts via a group email, maybe an hour or two to change the address in any online accounts. Do it once, you never have to do it again no matter how often you change ISP's.
Have you done all the standard tests, connecting your router to the BT test socket behind the master socket faceplate? Checked/changed your ADSL filters? Are all active sockets filtered? Any phone problems (eg noise on the line)?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

    Gmail address?
connecting your router to the BT test socket behind the master socket faceplate????
How do I check the ADSL filter???
When you say all active sockets what do you mean, the socket with the router or every socket in the house? Because its always been just the router one.
No noise on the line or phone problems.

    GMail:

You need an ADSL filter on all active extension sockets, eg all those with a phone plugged in-not just the one with the router. This includes Sky digiboxes connected to the phone line.
Test a filter by swapping it with a known good one.
Recheck your line with the router plugged into the BT test socket-this is behind the split faceplate on the master socket, just undo the 2 screws on the lower half and pull it forward, the test socket is then visible. This isolates all your internal wiring, where the fault might be.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

I am with Aol non-LLU exchange and i only pay £9.99 a month , think its silver. I would call the techie guys at Aol as some of them are ok. I can still use my Aol email, i just go into Aol home page and sign in with that. I have none of the Aol software on my computer.
Read this on how to do it. http://www.cyberiapc.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=3323 thread 3

    Just found this

Try changing the Wireless Channel on the router. There may be interference in the air causing bad data to drop the connection. Also, Make sure you don't have your Cordless phone base sitting on top of your wireless router.

Put the wire that goes into your router from the phone line in a different socket on the router.

& I don't have a "New Connection Wizard"" I dont know why you have not got that. I did mine about 5 years ago and now when i switch computer on i am just connected, i dont have to click anything.

See if this makes any difference http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,6332885~mode=flat
But i would call Aol techie and see if they can sort out your connection issues. If you get a guy who is rubbish just call again and with luck your get a guy that knows what to do.I had one techie guy that was useless so called back and got a really nice guy that sorted my router problems out.
You could always reset your router or update it.
