Lock old posts.

Just about to reply to a post & spotted the previous post was in 2007.

New member had joined today and added a new post to it. Very annoying.

Would it be a good idea to automatically lock older posts?
Most posts re-opened are usually spammers, Offering their own goods or services.

One i had to laugh at a few weeks back was a member complaining a special offer was no longer valid for RAC? membership (i think).
The original post was from 2008 so not suprising really.

That "Asda dropping petrol prices to 76.9p"one that recently got dredged up after 5 years must've raised a few eyebrows!

Some old posts keep going for a long time and stay relevant through the years, such as the ones on keeping warm in winter, and handy hints type threads, so maybe automatic referral to a moderator before a post shows up on an old thread would be more appropriate.

So if, for example, there have been no new posts in a thread for 3 (or 6) months, then any new posts after that would be scanned briefly by a moderator before being added to the thread if they are still relevant, or deleted if not.

Good idea but there are no moderators on this site

Certainly wouldnt work at all for the Old Style Board.

We're forever re-opening threads over there. Not much changes on queries re running a household, etc, in Old Style fashion.

It's up to would-be posters to have the nous to check out that they are posting on a thread that is still "relevant" on any of the Boards. MSE can't "hold the hands" of everyone - it has to rely on people having some sense of their own....

Usually the offending post is that of a spammer or troll. If so, report the post, it will be removed, and the thread will sink back into the archives (unless another member posts in reponse to the troll/spammer)

Locking of all old threads wouldn't be viable because (a) of the resources required and (b) sometimes, resurrecting the old thread is the appropriate thing to do.
