Student discounts without NUS extra

I'm tempted by the card but not sure if it is worth it so long as the standard University ID card is accepted by most places.0 -
You can get a HMV Student Card offering the SAME 10% discount for free (I did last year and they still offer this so I am going to try to get one again this year) as long as you have valid student photo ID, since my student card runs until 2008 I should be fine for one.0

How about we all try the following and get our friends to do the same :
Go into the stores that say they do student discount, get your stuff, go to the counter, ask if they do student discount with a normal card. if they do.....then great, if not just say "ok, well I'll go elsewhere to get this" and then put your stuff back (you can always go back the next day and get the stuff anyway!). If enough people do this, they'll realise that they're actually going to lose money.
I know it's a bit underhand, and we need to have heaps of people to make it happen, but I'm sure as hell going to try!0 -

I think that's actually very sensible. That's my plan from now on....!0 -

what hmv is this? in selfridges they outright refused. but then again i just paid anyways.
we should try the change your mind cause of lack of discount tack. i might also write a few letters of complaint
something along the lines of ' i picked out all sorts, worked out my money carefully went to pay and was told i didnt get student discount w/o extra dispite having nus card/student card w/nus logo. i didnt have enough money as i am a STUDENT so had to put everything back humiliating myself. in the end i ended up having to go to tescos/inferior online shop and i am frankly disappointed shocked and disgusted that your company is refusing people who are obviously hard up but would like to buy your products.':A Boots Tart :A0 -
Last year I got my HMV one in Norwich, they mention on their website about both the NUS Extra and their own Student Card and say their own one expires September 2007, since mine expires this month they MUST be giving away new ones and since the NUS Extra card already gives the same discount then you must be able to get this card still without an NUS Extra.0

Dorothy Perkins were fine giving me discount with my democracy NUS card when I bought some smart trousers that I needed for clinical placement yesterday. Burton men's shop would only accept discount on full-price items and not sale items, but they were happy to accept the democracy NUS card).0

At Lincoln Uni we have to pay £10 for the card but there is then £5 of credit placed on there to spend at the co-op..... so it is actually only costing a fiver..... already saved5.50 in discount so it has paid for itself already.

yep 15% off at DP was perfectly fine. all bookshops ie foyles borders waterstones will take regular university cards when they have student discount days running. orange had a quickie look at my uni card and said it was fine. my sis didnt even need a card, she did her phone deal over the telephone, said she didnt have an nus number but the guy took her word for her being a student as she already had a student package in her name.:A Boots Tart :A0
