Student discounts without NUS extra

I would like to know where people are discovering we can get our student discounts without the useless NUS extra card.

My student ID (King's College) has the NUS logo on and the words 'member of NUS' printed on it. I also am refusing to buy the NUS extra card as I know the union already pay £7 per student for membership, so why on earth should I pay extra???

From my experience so far Orange will accept student card without Extra (instore at least), All arcadia shops (eg topshop, miss selfridge, dorthoy perkins, burtons etc), macdonalds, all the major book shops in thier current 10% for students week (including foyles). Also in london most independents are still accepting any form of student ID (eg judd books etc.)

the only place I've been refused is HMV. I tried to argue that my student card had the NUS thing on but they were having none of it.

has anyone tried subway? amazon? pc world? where is your student card valid without Extra? please report on where and when and we can see how useless/useful extra actually is.

Ate at Hendon Subway the otherday and said I was a student. I started looking for my ID but realised i'd emptied my wallet so he gave me n my 2 friends the discount. It may have just been a nice person.
  • I went to Southampton Uni, which disafiliated itself from the NUS a while ago. I had no problems getting discounts with my SU card in Southampton itself, but at home in Exeter it was a little more problematic - one place that refused was New Look despite my insistence that New Look in Southampton had always given me 10% off. In the end I found that asking to see the manager, then ranting about the uselessness of the NUS in general etc etc eventually worked - if only because they wanted to shut me up!
  • I got refused at Subway Loughborough; they said it had to be the extra card or at least say subway on it >.>

  • amazon won't as they've only joined up to the whole student discount thing this year, specifically with the extra card.

The normal card still works in the cinema (tried in it Showcase, VUE and Odeon with no problems).

It is a real pain that Amazon won't take a normal card - there is no way that a 5% discount is going to get me back more than the £10 for the card!

  • I got to Nottingham Trent Uni and got a student card with the nus logo on it. I don't have the NUS extra card.

So far it has got me discount in Subway (they never even looked at it), HMV, Burton (15%), Showcase and Waterstones book store.
  • If you have an Orange phone (contract or PAYG) you can get discounts (Sort of a BOGOF) on wednesdays (text film to 241) PLUS you can get an additional discount if you show your student card. My friend and I went last wednesday and as we are both students we only paid £4 for 2 tickets! :D

  • i think it really does depends on who's working at the time. i've used my regular uni card (nus) to get discounts from hmv a few times since the extra card has come out..

I picked up my student card last night, wasn't really expecting one, and apparently I can pay an extra £10 to get a 'proper' NUS card.

Just wondering if I have the nerve to ask for student discount (probably do, since I have the card!)

But all I am doing is evening classes in lipreading! :rotfl: For the princely sum of £25 for the year!
