It's not a cheap PSU, it's an antec one, it came with the case. I can't try another PSU as it's a micro atx psu. I checked a lot of reviews etc before buying.

No switch on the back of the PSU. Just double checked, the memory is PC2-5300 so it is 677mhz. Clearly I was having a blonde moment.

    Is the PSU new?

From a quick read, I suspect one rail of the PSU is down.

Yeah it's a new PSU, case, with PSU arrived yesterday.

Agh, this is turning into a nightmare lol. I might just return the lot and buy a WDTV. Now I don't know if it's the CPU, motherboard or PSU lol.

    Can you beg/borrow/steal a multimeter?
    Test psu - http://www.hardwareheaven.com/guides/testingPSU/

    Doubt it's the cpu.
  • just below the battery there is a jumper, CLR CMOS, make sure it's open :)
    ..ie NOT clearing the CMOS

....and you HAVE plugged in the 4 pin CPU power point (top right..ATX)??

I don't know anyone with one. I don't think it's the CPU either. TBH, I'm thinking it's the mobo.

Yes it's clear and yes I've plugged the 4pin in. I've quadruple checked all the connections.

There are a range of eliminating stages, the third of which as spud17 says is PSU. The fact that its a good brand and new means nothing to a techie - we've seen dozens of brand new ones that are U/S.

You can try a~n~other one for test purpose it does not have to be in the case, just sit it on the table will do.

Now what are the beep codes ?, you are going to have to get a speaker on the pins !. In the meantime before you bed down tonight :

    - 13a power switched off at the wall
    - kettle lead cable [ earth ] still plugged into the puter
    - short the pins again on the CMOS
    - take out the battery and leave it out all night
    - unplug the puter from the wall
    - have two or more falling down waters - you've had a bad day

    In the morning :

    - CMOS jumper in the non-short position
    - replace the battery, plug in and switch on etc

What happens now ? Yes I know, but most of us have has one machine that mysteriously boots the next day after a night without a brain, call it black magic or whatever.

Sorry, I wasn't suggesting it couldn't be the PSU, I've had new PSU's be faulty myself, just pointing out that it wasn't a cheapo one as an earlier poster had mentioned.

I've taken it apart now, going to contact ebuyer Monday and return the motherboard and case. I did try taking out the c-mos battery, not all night though, obviously lol.

I don't actually have a spare PSU, only the one in my desktop, and I honestly don't want to start taking my PC apart.

Obviously something is faulty, it's all less than 48 hours old, so I'd like it replaced. I'd bloomin frustrating to have wasted a weekend on this lol, was up till 4 last night trying to get it to start, and again today, with the advice given here. It took a lot longer than usual to put together too, because the case is obviously small and thus fiddly.

I think I've been lucky thus far, every other pc I've built has taken a few hours tops. The hard work seems to come when you switch it on lol.
