Thanks all for well-wishes :) it is indeed a nasty UTI, she has a fever etc, went to all-night chemist to pick up antibiotics and hopefully she'll feel be on the mend tomorrow.
becky, I'm not personally a breastfeeder but that sounds exactly like OH's experiences in the early weeks and probably quite normal at first :/ but someone with direct practical knowledge will be along any second! Good luck and welcome :)

beckyandjack - it sounds similar to my experience (apart from the pain, can't help with that). I had days where I felt like I didn't move from the sofa, especially once DH was back at work and wasn't able to help me 'break the cycle' iykwim? I tried to do something to take his mind off it if I felt he should have had enough, ie put him in his bouncing chair or rock him and sing him a song...if that didnt work then I just carried on feeding him! I also found it helped to just get him in the pram and go for a walk to take his mind off food.

It does get much, much easier, especially once the baby is a little bit bigger and easier to distract. My little man would quite happily feed all day if I let him though....as much for comfort as anything else I think especially since he refused a dummy.

I also found it helped to do something else at the same time, ie go online, read a book, as I didn't feel as though I was 'losing' so much time just sitting feeding.

It sounds like you're doing a really good job.

I recognised your name, were you on the pg thread? What;s your little girl called?

Breastfeeding advice, I'm old school hun, I spent weeks just cuddling my baby this time, but I did give a dummy early on to give my b00bs a break. Might be just comfort sucking. As for the pain, that's the let-down, you need Krystal, she might be on in a mo. XXX

Hope Mrs Bruno doesn't have too bad a night. X

Redmel, was it a fluke or is your LO sleeping through?

Well, looks like nap problems have spread today som, ladyb, krystal. A missed her pre bedtime nap (at in laws...grrr) so she quietly cried from 6-7:30pm with her eyes closed. :(

Haha, I thought it was your little darling who is sleeping ALLLL night:) I did spot your post earlier, but forgot to comment:)

T isn't too bad, not managing the whole night yet, but goes to bed at 7pm, wakes for a fast feed at 3(ish) and then straight back to sleep until 6-7am:D

I just don't get why she can't sleep all night...her brother managed it from 3wks old;)

Hi Becky! congrats on your new bundle and it is normal for a new baby to constantly feed, they have tiny tummies and your milk is digested faster than formula.
A few of us have found a day in bed continually feeding with lots of snacks/drinks and good films help to build your supply. Its also good for chilling and getting everyone away for a while lol!
There are a few BFs here and Krystal, Elle and i forget who else are trained in BF. hope thiungs get easier soon!

I am really off to bed now been catching up and also started Christmas shopping lol! x

Sorry Becky, this thread can move super fast :)

Two weeks in your baby's probably having a growth spurt so it's possible that she just needs more milk more often. I vaguely remember 2-3 hour feeds at that age. Or else she's rooting because she can smell your milk - does she still root when someone else is holding her or is she content just to be cuddled?

It's also quite normal for it to hurt so early on (think of the amount of abuse your nipples were taking before compared to now - it takes a while for them to toughen up), but it sounds like it's hurting more than normal so I might check with your health visitor to see if there's a BF specialist who can talk to you. Or search for the phone number of the National Breastfeeding Helpline and they might know more. In the short term, you can calm boob pain with cold cabbage leaves in your bra.

  • evening everyone,

i've been pointed this way for some advice about breastfeeding from another thread.

I had my little girl just over two weeks ago, we were doing really well with breastfeeding but the past few days have been a complete horror. She wants to feed for approx 20-30 mind every 1.5-2hrs and just always seems hungry. I fed her at 8.00, she had a good half hour, went to sleep and fell off herself, burped her which didn't wake her and put her down. Five mins later shes screaming blue murder and rooting for more food. Do I just keep feeding her? feel like theres just not enough that i'm providing is this possible?

Also it still really hurts for the 1st few minutes, pain feels like its going into my back and down my arm, is this normal or am i doing something dreadfully wrong??

sorry for all the questions but i am getting to the end of my tether and feel like giving up right now which i really don't want to.

    Thanks in advance lovely people

Please dont give up! Up until 4 weeks, I have to say my daughter was attached to me constantly (night time feeds were every hour for the first 2 weeks). I literally lived on the setee with her whilst I kept myself amused by watching a whole box set of the Royle Family. It will get better and easier! I promise! For me, it was the 6 week mark when everything just seemed to fall into place. If she was hungry, just latch her on- no cleaning bottles, waiting for them to cool or crying either as she was fed instantly. I know every baby is different but im sure others will tell you the same.

And with regards to latching on, even now, her morning feed (when shes v.hungry) makes my toes curl at first.

Even recently, my DD had a growth spurt (shes 12 weeks) and was feeding every 1 1/2 hours during the day again, it may also be because shes started to sleep through during the night.

You are doing a brilliant job.

Hi Becky. We do have a resident Breastfeeding consellor (sorry, I can't spell that one), who isn't about at the moment, but we are all well advised by her, and I can manage this one!

First of all, don't panic. Yes it is normal, and no you are not doing anything wrong. As baby gets bigger she needs more milk - the way she tells your body to produce more milk is to feed more. Some people call it cluster feeding, some call it a growth spurt, but whatever you call it, it is babys natural instinct kicking in to increase your supply. It doesn't mean she isn't getting enough now, or you need to suppliment with formula or anything, just sit tight and things will calm down in a few days. In the meantime, make sure you have biscuits and drinks within reach of your feeding spot, and take the time to master reading/playing on the playstation/chatting to us while you are feeding :rotfl:.

I'm not so sure about the pain bit of your question though - it is normal for the let down reflex to be painful when it first kicks in (it does turn more into a little tingle as the weeks go on), but that is painful in your boobs, not anywhere else. Is it maybe to do with the way you are holding her? Are you tensed up when you feeed? Maybe some cushions to help take the strain? I'm clutching at straws on this one, but someone else might come along with some more helpful suggestions on this bit.

    Hi Michelle

Day was ok, its got rather windy up here..

We've been viewing houses, as my parents are buying, we're renting from them, till they can move up here in about 8 yrs, and then hopefully we'll know what the hell we are doing....

I'm torn between the two so far, one is bigger but has a poorer garden and kitchen... and second has a shared drive access, but no steps into it, but is smaller.....
    Third one tomorrow....

Thats brill Gill. We stayed at MILs last night too, usually its whole weekend but weve still not sorted the sleeping arrangements for Ayana as shes just about fitting in her moses basket there. ;):p I DONT NEED ANY IDEAS EITHER, THANKS! :) ( I know it could be fixed v.easily but Ill just play dumb for now until DH figures something out.) I cant believe you can express so much- im really struggling. :( It takes me about a week just to do one feed! :(

It used to take me ages as well, it's probably only been the last month that I've managed. Do you have an electric pump? I used a TT manual pump at first which was awful, then I moved onto a medela mini, then I treated myself to a medela swing (£42 on ebay)

Apologies if you know all this but I had to ask for loads of advice so thought I'd share anyway :p I put a warm flannel over both bbs before I start as someone (aless?) said it helps stimulate milk production. I always express about an hour or so after his last feed of the day and I try and do it in the living room where we have pictures of him that I can look at if I need to. (I read that this also helps to get it flowing, if no pics try visualising the baby feeding) I find I can get 100ml a night usually, so 2 nights makes 1 feed for him. It's kind of like adding an extra feed so if you do it frequently then the milk will be there iyswim...only problem is if you don;t do it then baby sleeps through their next feed/wakes up later than usual then bbs can be a bit full and sore lol.
