Bought a car & now find out its a Cat D write-off!

I had a similar thing on ebay with a moped advertised as only 12 miles, been stored, bankrupt stock. I paid £500 for it for my son. Two days after we gave it to him it packed up. The mechanic said the wear on it showed it had been used for thousands of miles and in fact had been repaired badly previously. He contacted Peugeot for us and they sent him details of the bike having made a claim under warranty 2 years before at 2000 miles! I cant fathom out yet how it had a later date for its reg, and the DVLA were useless. However trading standards acted for us and found another 6 mopeds sold on ebay by same person. We got all our money back before it even went to court. But we felt very low about the whole thing.
Since then Id rather pay extra and buy vehicles from a main dealer.
I hope you get a decent car now.0 -

I remember when I was looking for cars earlier this year... I saw several old-shape Astras around the £2000 mark, including one I really liked at an independent dealer in west london.
I took the day off work, but all the cars I ran HPI checks on that day turned out to be previous write-offs (some Cat C's in there too!!!). It seems some dealers actually just sell just write off vehicles. I also spoke to many "private" sellers too who always asked "which one" when I said I was calling about the car for sale.
Main dealers only for me now... they wont risk their reputation and you can sue their !!! off pretty easily in small claims.0
