Insured to drive any car but...

what if the car itself is not insured?

Basically Im selling my car and my insurance on the car is about to run out. As most policies allow the policy holder to drive any car 3rd party fire and theft would this still apply if the car itself is not insured.

Im just a bit worried as when someone want to test drive the car, would they actually be insured to do so? (assuming their own car insurance policy allows them to drive any car) Im assuming my car would get flagged by the police's ANPR system?

Thanks, iv'e never sold a car before!

It's not very clear but I assume you have car insurance for a car other than the one you're selling, and it's that DOC (drive other car) provision you're thinking of using?

You need to check the wording in the policy. Some don't have DOC at all, some require the car to be insured and the major stumbling block for you, is that most (every one I've seen) only cover cars not owned by you or hired to you.

You're probably better getting short term cover if that is the case.
  • Thanks for the reply Ian.

I have insurance on the car that Im selling but it runs out in 10 days time. So when someone comes to test drive it after 10 days time when my policy expires, would they be covered presuming they have fully comp insurance on another car and are allowed to drive any other car?

    Very unlikely.

    No! The opposite is true!

If they have DOC on their certificate that is exactly what it means!
  • Im insured TPFT on my car and on my policy is states that i can drive any other car - with 3rd party cover ONLY - as long as i have the car owners consent.

So , i guess it would be hard for anyone on this board to tell you a definitive answer to your query because it depends what the insurance policy documents of the potential buyer of your car actually says.

tho, even if the wording says DOC, it still means the other car needs its own insurance.
similarly the insurance doesnt state the other car needs tax, mot, because its all a given.

get a day policy, or a friendly farmer with a private road.

ps, when i sold my car, the buyer didnt have insurerance at all, so i drove them round to see what it was like! they bought it!

If you move your insurance from your old car to your new car, your old car will not be insured and both your and potential buyers, Drive other cars,TPO cover will not be valid.

I've never had a policy that said the other car needed insurance as well.
Mine is valid to drive any other car not owned by me, regardless of whether it is insured in it's own right or not, (but one exception is picking up from a police impound yard)

    Ignore this.

It doesn't mean the other car needs its own insurance at all! (eg Were it true, which insurer would pay for any claim?)

And how would you get the uninsured car to the friendly farmer's private road?
  • Thanks for the replies, I think I'll just insure it for another month or so to be on the safe side! Insurance is confusing!
