Hi All

My very kind auntie who has set up a kind a micro industry selling HM chutneys and other produce has given me some of her lovely chutneys.

The problem is that I don't really know what to do with them. I know you can use chutneys with bread and cheese, but since I very rarely eat bread I'm a bit stumped. I've done a search on the internet, and over this board but I can only find ideas how to MAKE chutneys not what to DO with them.:o

At the moment I have the following:

HM Caramelised Onion Marmalade*
HM Green Apple and Tomato Chutney*
HM Damson and Apple Chutney
HM Apple and Mint Jelly
HM Plum Chutney

I've had a few of them a while, and the ones starred haven't been used. I've been adding a bit of chutney when I do things like escalopes as a side sauce, but I rarely do this and they aren't being used much.

If one of you kind posters could possibly give me some ideas about recipes I can use with these, by adding them to something (or direct me to a previous post I may have missed), I will be eternally grateful! I really don't want to see them go to waste since a lot of effort has gone into them.

Thanks :D

I am not big on chutneys and if i do make one then its usually a small amount and i will use it immediately.
but - both the plum chutney and the onion marmalade i have used with pork chops. I cook the chops as usual then top them with about a dessertspoon or tablespoon of chutney then add fresh breadcrumbs mixed with some cheese (I use a mix of about a teaspoon of parm a tablespoon of mature chedder to about an ounce of breadcrumbs for four chops).
then either return to the oven or put under a low grill untill the topping is nicely browned! the chutney warms up with the heat of the chops and the grill. absolutely delish - so much so that OH whose turn it was to cook on wednesday asked me to show him how to do them!
I am sure you will have more ideas soon from the rest of the lovely peeps on here!

The plum would probably go well with duck and the apple and mint one with lamb.

You can add chutneys to curries and tagines.

Some of those would go lovely with sausages. Sausage, chips and chutney on the side to dip into.

I have to say that I didnt think that plums and pork would work when I first tried this - but i was going to do apple chutney then realised the grandkids had eaten all the apples and all i had left in the fruit bowl were some rather hard plums! hence it was plum chutney not apple sauce! and it really does go beautifully! apple sauce is now second choice! the onion marmalade is also a fave (when the fruit bowl is empty). I also admit to liking onion marmalade and cheese toasties.

i often put a dollop in a curry sauce or bbq sauce to use them up.

If you ever need a party idea, i slice a french stick, drizzle with oliVe oil,put in oven to bake till golden, don't overcook, then i top them with a slice of brie and a teaspoon or so of carmelised onion relish and pop it back in the oven for a few mins or till the cheese starts to melt, they always go down well and you could use the other chutneys too.

Thanks all! I've got a bit more inspiration now - will start getting them used up.

I especially like the Pork chops idea! Will also give the onion marmalade with grilled cheese today! :D

I would imagine any chutney goes well with cold (or hot) meat. I made sweet chilli jam last year which had a real kick and went very well with gammon and mashed potato.

well....in the walk-in pantry anyways :rotfl:

I have made chutney in a glut-inspired frenzy and we have FARRRRRRRRRRRR more than we can eat. I can give some away but there is seriously more than what can be realistically consumed in a year or two. I know they don't go off but my gluts aren't likely to be reduced as I get better at growing things.

So, I need ideas on what to put chutneys on. With as many things as I can eat because it's getting worse.

    We have
    pineapple, date and chilli
    green tomato
    plum
    cucumber and green tomato relish

and on the hob is plum, apple and chilli jelly.
