Mondeo EGR Valve question

DO THE EGR VALVE YOURSELF. If you go onto the Ford Mondeo Enthusiasts forum, there's a post on how to do it. It is really really simple. Mine was clogged up to the point of literally only having 1/3 of the airflow it should have. Took me a couple of hours to clean it and the inlet manifold out (when they're bad usually the first couple of ports on the inlet manifold get clogged up too) and needed nothing other than basic spanners and sockets, a can of brake cleaner and a roll of kitchen towel. Most people on the MEG forum just blank them off.
Thinking about it, its been 40k since I last did it and I might do it again next week...
It does sound easy but then I'm female so doing car/bike stuff scares me.

Anyway, normally when a petol one puts the EML on its usually a lambda probe. EGR problems are on the diesel ones.
Again good info thanks Harvey. Reckon I'll end up having to take it into the garage for them to have a look. Fingers crossed it will be something cheap to fix like the lambda or the MAF or something.0 -
Seconding just blanking the thing off. They don't actually help with the running of the car in any way, if anything they make it worse because your inlet can end up with crap inside it too. They're just there to meet an emissions standard that is much stricter than what they will test on the MOT.
A decent independent should be able to help. Just make sure it's removed properly.0 -
The maf sensor on my old festa was playing up, it hunted on tickover and misfired. I took the thing apart and cleaned it after that the car was fine, might save a few bob.Nothing to see here, move along.0

If a management light comes on and the is no loss of power, don't worry about it, the old saying "let it develop" springs to mindANURADHA KOIRALA ??? go on throw it in google.0

I've not let my wife see your post. She'd lynch you.
:D
Yeah but you know what I mean. A good example is bolts - they're either so tight I haven't got a cat in hell's chance of even budging them or I give it a bit too much wellie and strip the damn thing!
I'm a firm believer in sticking to what you know.

Thanks for the posts folks. When I eventually get a garage to look at it I will post the results even if they are painful. I'm back at work next week though and things will be hectic so it might be a couple of weeks before I've got time to take it in.
I'll also post if any symptoms develop. Ran about in it locally earlier today and it still seems fine but then they are mainly 30/40mph limits. I'll have more idea on the bypass next week.
Thanks for the posts.0 -
the bypass idea is usually for the diesel ones. Not known anyone to do it on the petrol ones....0

I had a 1.8 Mondeo last year that had EGR problems. I agree and I'm pretty sure it cant be done on the petrol ones. IIRC coolant runs through the valve so blanking it off would mean that the coolant would not be cycling through the engine.
It is a pretty easy job to replace them though. The only nippy thing is that the coolant needs to be drained before it can be replaced.0
