Mondeo EGR Valve question
Just a quick question because I know you folks are knowledgeable about such things.
I had the RAC out to my 1.8 Mark 3 (2003) Mondeo today because the engine management light came on. It has just over 51000 miles on it.
They ran their diagnostic computer on it and the fault came up as P400 EGR valve fault.
The questions I have are:
1) The car doesn't have any symptoms of EGR failure (I Googled them) There are no clouds of black smoke or power/acceleration loss. It isn't using more fuel than it normally does either. So would you advise having the valve replaced anyway or waiting until there are some symptoms?
2) How much roughly is an EGR valve replacement on a Mondeo at a dealership?
Thanks in advance,
Takoda

Once they sort the web conversion over go onto Talkford.com and see what they have to say. They were Fordmondeo.org but are now becoming more inclusive, but lots of very knowledgeable Mondeo owners on it0

Yes thanks for that Mambo. Any idea how long it will take before the new site is up and running?0

Cheers.
Basically there aren't any symptoms at all. Just the engine management light came on yesterday - I now know that just means a fault is being recorded and doesn't mean the car is about to blow up!
No symptoms at all. Car running normally. If it wasn't for the engine management light I wouldn't have known about it.
Main dealer has just quoted £475 (on the phone) if it needs replacing but I'm wondering whether to wait until there are actually some symptoms.0 -
it may not be the egr valve,it could be the MAF sensor which shows as the same code, but the MAF is a hell of a lot cheaper
did the rac clear the code/em lightIMOJACAR

No he said they sometimes get blamed for clearing lights so he's left it for the Ford mechanics to see.
Does the light still being on make a difference?
It would be fabulous if the fix was a cheaper one!0 -
if you have a 'local' diagnostic garage ask them to clear the light,it could have been just a hick up.and then wait to see if the light comes on again when driving,
I know on my vauxhall that the code said EGR and I had the loss of power/limp home mode kick in,
luckilly a pal had the same thing a few months before on his and after effin about with EGRs and many hours at the garage it turned out to be the MAF sensor,
I changed mine and hey presto £35 fixIMOJACAR

That's useful to know thanks for posting that info.0 -
DO THE EGR VALVE YOURSELF. If you go onto the Ford Mondeo Enthusiasts forum, there's a post on how to do it. It is really really simple. Mine was clogged up to the point of literally only having 1/3 of the airflow it should have. Took me a couple of hours to clean it and the inlet manifold out (when they're bad usually the first couple of ports on the inlet manifold get clogged up too) and needed nothing other than basic spanners and sockets, a can of brake cleaner and a roll of kitchen towel. Most people on the MEG forum just blank them off.
Thinking about it, its been 40k since I last did it and I might do it again next week...0 -
you'll have to wait until the Mondeo site is back open as they are changing it all over, annoingly so...!
Anyway, normally when a petol one puts the EML on its usually a lambda probe. EGR problems are on the diesel ones.0
