If you want something a bit different - try the Shetland Isles. It's the most northerly part of the UK, British but with a bit of a Norse feel. Spectacular wildlife <remember BBC's Springwatch?>, deserted beaches, beautiful seascapes, very friendly & safe with little or no crime, great culture - very musical!

Come and visit us in the most northerly area in mainland Shetland - Northmavine. We have the largest parish with the smallest population <around 800> and some of the best scenery and walks in Shetland. We are classed as a community on the edge and are trying to attract interest in our area - to encourage more tourists & visitors, to encourage people to move to the area & to encourage business and also make it an ever better place for locals.

Great place to bring up kids! Safe, high educational achievement, low cost housing. Shetland is a prosperous authority <we have the largest oil terminal in Europe> so education, public services & the elderly are all very well catered for.

Some people come to visit and don't leave. I came here for about 6 mths/1 yr and am still here 25 years later! It's surprising the number of people who have set off to explore the British Isles looking for a place to settle, started at the top and not left Shetland!

Yes, how do you get here? 1 hr flight from Aberdeen - flights link from other UK airports. Up to Oct 30 - direct flights to Shetland from Stansted - more direct flights from Stansted next year as the trial this year has been very popular. Or 12 hr overnight sailing from Aberdeen on large well-appointed ships.

We've just launched our own wee community website - for locals, tourists, visitors & prospective residents! Come & have a look, see how we're trying to improve our own community and please pop into the forum & say hello! You would be made most welcome. :) Mention if you have come from the Moneysavingexpert forum. :) Details in the sig.

Sorry, rambled on too much. :)

    Hi there,

I'm just an hour from the border also (if that) and have been up to Aviemore on a couple of occasions recently, and stayed at the Aviemore Highland Resort. It's great if you have kids.
