Vat Charge

i recently went on holiday to jersey and used my mobile, i am on a monthly contract with vodafone, when i got home i noticed i had been charged vat on my calls, texts and mobile browsing, which amounted to £35.00 I asked for the vat back but they say they could not give me the refund because it was part of the EU. However jersey is not in the EU VAT area, should i be able to claim my VAT back ?

    I don't think so.

Jersey Telecom would charge your mobile provider (vat free?) but when your provider passes on the cost they have to charge VAT as it is a taxable cost in the Uk. That's my understanding anyway.

If the Jersey network had charged you directly, you might have got the vat back. But they didn't, they charged your network who then charged you, and as they are in the EU. . .

OP - Are you aware of this news items published earlier this week (as you are a newbie, you may not have fully explored the webste or had this news item emailed to you) :-
    http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/phones/2010/08/mass-refunds-for-vodafone-customers-following-billing-blunder

Jersey is NOT part of the European Union for VAT purposes - the mass refund only relates to monthly contract customers ad only for the data useage aspect - for some reason, the calls and texts are still VATable.....so there should be scope to get a partial VAT refund for the data useage.
Anger ruins joy, it steals the goodness of my mind. Forces me to say terrible things. Overcoming anger brings peace of mind, a mind without regret. If I overcome anger, I will be delightful and loved by everyone.
