Sky scam phone call?

The phone rang and there was the dreaded pause and then came the voice of a distant caller...

They said they were from Sky and said they wanted to know if my new viewing card had arrived in the past week.

I asked them to confirm they were from Sky and they said that they were its shipping agent.

I said I had not received a card.

They then asked to confirm my address, and I did not confirm it but told them it was wrong.

The phone went quiet for a few moments and then it hung up.

I called Sky (I looked up the freephone number via saynotto0870) and spoke to a lady there who told me that there was nothing on my account to say I was due a new card.

So, I am wondering if the call was a scam of some sort.

Any thoughts?

I then had another call within half an hour saying they understood there were problems in my area.
I asked which company, and "Jade" said she was from Sky; I kept asking and she insisted she was from Sky and then gave me a number I could call back on: 0844 2410 285.
I said I didn't have problems and she said she would make a note that I don't have Sky.
The above number is given on Comet's web site amongst others, so it may be genuine, but I'm not phoning a premium rate to find out!
    Am phoning 0800 0512 597 again.

I called Sky again, and they told me that that 0844 number is Sky's but that neither of those calls were from Sky.

Sky is transmitted from a satellite in the sky and if one area has a problem then every area has a problem. It is not like terrestrial TV where there are 100's of transmitters and if one goes down you get a problem in that area. If a satellite goes down everybody has a problem.

I have had Sky, analogue and digital since 1990, and I have never had a phone call from Sky in all that time.

I've had phone calls from companies pretending to be or implying that they are from Sky but never from Sky.

    OK,
1, Its very easy to spoof caller ID.
2, They are just trying to get you to confirm you have Sky, any response apart from putting the phone down gets you on a dialling list that will be sold on.

Be aware there was a scam at one point where you would get a semingly innocent phone call which would confirm you used a certain service i.e. Sky.

Then a few days later you would get a call from the service provider, in this case Sky, saying your direct debit had failed and to continue using the service you needed to pay the bill now by credit card or be cut off. Of course the caller was not really Sky and the crook now has your credit card details. So just be careful about any calls over the next few weeks.

how about ask the caller if they have sky or how big they're dish is, what package they are on, have they received a new card yet, have they got any problems getting any channels,
