Where to purchase the ink was only a suggestion as you can obviously buy larger quantities, so was the diy filling if you are a little bit handy, which I find cheaper than the cheapest of cartridges.

Great advice there tonyw. I purchased the Epson SX115 from Argos yesterday and just ordered 4 full sets of inks including shipping for under £16!! Setup the printer last night and it's superb, for under £40 with scanner, too good to be true almost.

  • hi, any chance of similar recommendations for a printer, all the same above requirements but with the added requirement that i want it to work well wirelessly with laptop Ideally with printer up stairs (1 floor) and laptop downstairs, and I'd prefer not to have to carry the laptop upstairs to print each time

    thanks

Well I'm waiting on Amazon to deliver the Epson Stylus SX515W High-Speed printer today so I'll let you know later. Supposed to print a photo in 20 seconds... We'll see. The only poor reviews were from people who didn't understand router security and couldn't get the wireless function of the printer to connect to the router.

Update: The printer was delivered at 7.59am and finished setting it up at 8.49am. Works quite well. It's very fast. Wireless was a bit difficult but I am an IT engineer so managed it. I don't read manuals I set it up without reading anything.

Good, pleased to all set, the real value / benefit of choosing Epson is only ever realised later with the real costs of printer use - replacement inks ! ;)

    Hi

I am looking to buy a new printer and could do with some advice. I would like something cost effective in terms of the cost of replacing ink.

Do I get inkjet/toner/laser??? Any tips?

Not too bothered if its wireless or a multi functional printer. Also doing mostly b&w stuff but some coloured but if there is a decent B&W around then would just get that

    Any helpers?

If you want a cost effective printer with cheap ink and would settle for B&W then you can't go wrong with a mono printer. Intial cost of printer is arounf £70-£80 and the ink cartridge depending on model is around £50 but you can't go wrong considering you'd get around 1500 pages per cartridge and the printing is very quick.

As some have said, it is definitely cheaper to buy an inkjet depending on your usage. If your going to go for an Inkjet Multi function printer then i would suggest Epson as currently they are the cheapest for compatible cartridges. It would also be worth looking at brother and Canon printers just research the models and ensure that you can get compatible (not remanufactured) cartridges for the printer.
Compatible ink cartridges from 87p each here
  • Ahhhhhh,, the great "what is the best and cheapest inkjet printer" hunt still goes on and on.
All contributors to these threads have their favourites, Mine without question was little Canon i250 the cheapest they made at the time about the size of a small toaster it delivered beautifull prints and the carts were cheap (compatibles), they don't make them any more, replaced with another Canon (multi function) it was cheap, died at 13 months, Brother was next, rubbish,, two Epsons Jamming and ink problems, now just got an HP, seems good so far,it's a case of buy and try after reading comments from posters like me. There must be an awe full lot of discarded printers in landfill sites.
