But this isn't true is it? Presumably you'd run out of money very quickly doing this, thus you can't afford to provide services for nothing.
I could provide services for nothing.
I'm self employed. Have been to 3 individual business's today. Could afford to say to 2 of them "hey, you know what, I already made some money at my first appointment, enough to live today on, therefore for you, I'll do it for free".
Did I say "all services"?
No. I simply said I could afford to provide services for free, which I could. Just as I'm sure, ISTL could provide his tennants with free, or drastically reduced rent, and still live....just as he was asking nearlynew to do, and trying to make some kind of point about him.
He's basically saying nearlynew should say "hey, I already got a property, you can have this one for x amount less than it's value cus I'm nice like that".0 -

Nope Graham that's not going to work. You said "You've said before that landlords provide a service, and help out those who can't afford to buy a property. If this is really so, why don't you help them out more, and stop charging them rent to live in your place"?0 -

Okay, I've read the thread now so will join the debate.
In the same way that ISTL provides a service to tenants, Twinnings Tea provides a service to me. They have a product (just like ISTL has a product) that they sell at a price that I find acceptable. Therefore I sometimes buy a packet of Earl Grey tea from them. This relationship works well: they make a product I like, at a price that I find acceptable, and I chose to purchase their product. Twinnings 'care' about me, in that they value my custom and treat me with respect by making sure my product is all lovingly prepared and packaged at my local supermarket. If their tea was badly made, or poorly packaged, or not stocked then I would take my business elsewhere. But this hasn't happened, so I'm sticking with them.
Isn't this the same with ISTL? There are plently pf properties available for his tenants, but they chose his. Presumably this is a mutually beneficial relationship for both parties, so why would ISTL give his services away for free? It doesn't matter whether he can afford to or not really.
I'd also argue that landlords provide a service for a load more types of people than just those who desparately want to buy but can't afford to.0 -

Aren't you supposed to tell me whats wrong with what I said?

Yes.
So howcome it's somewhat different for nearlynew?!?!
He also had a property, with plenty of buyers wanting property, but they chose his, and he sold it for a market price mutually convinient for the buyers, the mortgage lenders, and himself...
Am I missing something!?0 -

It's not. Where did I say it is? I'm cool with nearlynew having as many houses at whatever price he wants.Graham_Devon wrote: »He also had a property, with plenty of buyers wanting property, but they chose his, and he sold it for a market price mutually convinient for the buyers, the mortgage lenders, and himself...

No, nothing. That's all fine. Maybe I'm missing something.0 -

Well you picked me out for responding to ISTL's point to nearlynew and accused me of starting an argument from nothing and confusing myself.
I assumed you had a problem with what I was saying. But seem's you don't?

Confused of Devon.
But who really has a confused problem? Or who nearly does? I think the problem is really with Nearly who had a problem with Really. Well, he nearly did. You picked him out for having an issue with her, all because nearly really did a strange thing. So I guess the question we should all ask is about whether we all really nearly had the answer.
Doesn't this all come down to what the average wage is? And whether the average house is affordable to those in the South East?
I'm going to bed.0 -
