yup, I'd re-enable the stuff you disabled in MS config -tech support guy sounds like an idiot and you've quite possibly knocked out some functionality of your graphics drivers.

try re-installing firefox, could be a stray plug-in or something giving issues, otherwise by testing different browsers looks like you are actually getting a full speed connection to your XP PC all along and were getting an unusual result from one particular speed test when combined with one particular browser.....

i do 1 test at a time, what do you by plugging in ? or are you refering to the router, the tests ive done have been done connected to the router rather than direct to the modem but i can do that

Sorry what I mean is, you have 2 PCs. 1 XP and 1 W7. Are they both connected to the internet at the same time you do tests.

I am trying to rule out the possibility that when you try Windows XP its trying to download Windows Updates at the same time ;)

but how would the graphics controller affect the internet, ill get rid of all add ons then try reinstalling firefox

the guy didnt specifically say to disable the system 32, he said to disable 1 at a time and do a test and see if it made a difference which it didnt

It won't** but going in and randomly turning bits of it off won't be doing you any favours and when down the line you possibly find yourself suffering some all or none of the following

-you've defaulted onto generic windows display drivers and can't do anything remotely demanding with your graphics as you're only able to use using about 4% of your GPUs basic capability on emergency drivers

-you lose access to the interface to change advanced/propietary display features of your graphics drivers

-Games or other programs with moderately demanding graphics cause your PC to crash/lock up.

you'll forget you butchered your graphics controller software and will have more hassle

However the graphics are only important if you intend to use a screen with your PC, if you intend to use it purely as an automated 'box' without any visual means to interact with it then you're fine screwiing with your graphics drivers :)

(**and hence why on earth would you go turning things like that off, and why would you think a tech support person telling you you needed to disable your graphics drivers to fix your internet connection was anything other than an idiot)

Consider yourself extremely lucky to get such unheard of speeds
I have an "up to 8Mb" connection and never actually exceed 3Mb actual connection speed.....

its an old pc that doesnt play games,

the speed was still slow before i disabled the system files which i dont understand, yes i remembered now 1 was to do the intel graphics, 1 was to dow ith the keyboard hotkeys or shortcuts and the other was to do with office

ive enabled the graphics related system 32 and the hot keys 1, the 1 related to intel was called igfxtray.exe so i googled that and the response i got was " its a file which can be used for diagnostics on specific graphics chips " so i deemed it not neccesary

Thats most probably because you are using a BT line rather than cable.

Run your speedtests in safemode with networking, (option after using the F8 key on starting), in this mode most of the other drivers/progs are not loaded, so will give you a truer picture of your speeds.
