How soon did you pay the reduced fare? Did they give you a time frame for which it would apply, or any indication that this would go up if not paid within a certain period?

It should have everything written on the penalty fare that the OP was given.

I understand that, but the OP said that they received written confirmation that the penalty had been reduced, so this may shed some light on why the amounts requested and debited are different.

The more i re-read the Op it appears the OP got caught on national rail services not on the underground to which slightly different rules aply.

i'm amazed they didn't just check the account and see you had topped up a few moments before and agreed you had forgotten to swipe.....or weren't they able to do that?

They should have a handheld scanner which will show if there was credit on the card and if it was touched in at the start o f the journey.

By the Ops own admission they did not touch in at the start of the journey = Penalty fare.

In my defence I am normally more savvy and get out of them. My mistake in this scenario was A. Admitting that the error was on my part for not having topped up. (Always blame the machine in some way) B.

I will say that it was a genuine mistake I literally topped up seconds before boarding and totally forgot to swipe in (busy talking to friend and used to underground barriers)

By the OP's own admission they neither topped up, or touched in. They they so seem a little confused at to exactly what they did or didn't do.
Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear
  • Really wasn't worth the hassle, was it? There is really no way saying 'I couldn't be bothered to wait in the queue like everyone else' can be taken as justification.

If the queue is big and you're going to miss your train, I'm afraid you'll just have to leave for work earlier in future.

Perhaps they recognise you from previous occasions. So your card is marked, as it were.

I'm not perfect - I still remember the horror when I went to renew my travelcard to find out that it had expired the previous week.

But I would never have boarded a train without having paid my fare in any other case, and had a ticket inspector noticed, I would have accepted the penalty as due to my own stupidity.

The only dodginess I see is the repeated fare evasion catching up with you.

  • honestly ask yourself - if you'd realised you'd forgotten to pay and had totally got away with it, would you have volunteered to pay the money back?

Im guessing if there had not been a revenue inspector at the end station the OP would have walked through gladly knowing she had not paid.
