Freegle - Nationwide!!

Hiya all,

Anyone heard of Freegle? No?
Well, if you have something you want rid of, then you offer it on this site. If there's somethng you need (within reason) post it on this site. The best thing about it, is it is absolutely free, with no strings!!!

Google 'Freegle' and find your nearest group.

I am a moderator on one of these sites and am currently setting up my own in my hometown. My Dad is a group owner, so there are absolutely no strings. No money invloved!

(Also groups on facebook)

Have a look and see what you think! ;)

In many areas freegle replaced the old freecycle
  • Freecycle is still in rude health in most parts of the country (world) and is much bigger than Freegle.

Unfortunately the way they were treating the local moderators made many leave last year. Freegle is I believe, bigger in the UK now that Freecycle, and is always run by local people who understand the local situation and geography.

I have been both a Freecycle and a Freegle member and I think the concept they both share is great.

...and It's a great pity that the coming Yahoo Groups changes threaten the way they both operate:

    http://suggestions.yahoo.com/detail/?prop=groups&fid=210461

Having discussed it with our local mod, I'm confident that this won't be anything like the end of the movement, but there will be disruption as up to 8 million members migrate away from Yahoo Groups.

(There's over 1 million UK Freegle members and over 7 million Freecycle members worldwide).

In the meantime, if any of you guys would like to help change Yahoo's mind I'm sure all help / feedback / media exposure would be welcomed.

Yahoo has dropped the ball in its apparent quest to mimic FaceBook but the Freecycling movement will move on...

  • For those of you promoting Freecycle...
I didn't say a bad word about it!! I was only letting others know about Freegle too. Being a member of both Freegle and Freecycle groups, I have no preference, only that Freegle is British run, with British rules and local moderators.
Freecycle is almost exactly the same as Freegle, with the concept being the same (to keep items out of landfill).
Is this not the important thing here, not whether Freegle or Freecycle are the 'best'?
Schoolyard antics of 'I think this group is the best' doesn't help the environment, but these type of groups do, no matter what their name. I am aware that there are other groups out there with the same concept, with completely different names too.
And best of all, it's still all free.

A lot of it is going to be down to which group is best for you to use.

Members don't give a hoots about how the organisation treats the mods, what concerns them is how easy it is to use ad how little hassle they have.

Having also used both groups over the past 5 years the myfreecycle site in my mind is extremely clunky, I am always having problems with it.

Yahoo groups at least are maintained and fixed within 24hrs.

Freegle groups has a bigger base of the technical people who are improving life for those that recycle using either tfn/freegle.

    Support your local groups.
  • I recently received this email:

"I indicated that Yahoo were likely to delay moving groups which rely on reply-to-sender, like Freegle and Freecycle groups, until they had a solution for that.

I'm pleased to say they have now clearly committed to this in their latest blog:

"Reply-to Sender: Reply-to Sender as a reply setting from the web interface will be released very soon. None of the groups that have this option set as the default will be migrated to the remodel until this feature is available. Please note that you can continue to reply to sender via email as you were able to before."

Panic over. Forward this anywhere you like."

I am a member of our local Freecyle group, and it is absolutely great. Think a while ago, one of our Moderators were saying that the name Freecycle is from the United States, so United Kingdom are having to change from Freecycle to Feegle.

In time all the UK will be called Freegle. I am sure that is what i picked up anyway.
